hi there, am looking for a new road helmet having been using my mountain bike helmet so far (only been road cycling for a few months) and dont know which are the best brands to look at as there are so many.
The main reason for not using my mtb helmet any more (apart from the funny looks I get) is that it is dark grey and I want a bright helmet to try and stand out when in traffic.
can someone tell me the best brands to look at

thanks

  • I have been more than satisfied with my Uvex FP1. Not overly priced, looks great, light, and from safety experts like Uvex, I don't think there is anything to worry about in terms of safety. Plus, it is much more comfortable the the Bell Sweep I used to use. Definitely worth a look.

The most comfortable one. All brands fit differently, so you need to try them on. I find Spesh helmets fit me best, whereas Met, Bell and Giro are very uncomfortable unless I go a size up.

Specialized seem pretty popular at the moment.

Was impressed with the amount of air that got to my head and the weight of the
    Propero which was £40...

Then again, that's only the second helmet I've worn, since I always moaned they were too heavy.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

    Excellent advice :D

FWIW. I use a Giro Pneumo.

I've had a Bell and a Giro. Both were fine, but I personally got a better fit with the Giro. I also like that Giro have a crash replacement scheme. After crashing and cracking my Giro Monza last Monday I'm able to replace it on the scheme for £35 rather than having to buy a new one for £60.
  • have their been any road helmet tests in the mags or on the web lately? if so does anyone have a link, or any details of where I could read up. thanks for the advice so far, chris

The one that fits! So I wouldn't get too concerned about magazine tests or reviews as it'll probably just come down to what's in stock nearby and how you get on with them.
  • I agree with everyone on "the one that fits" idea and realise that is important, but so is quality, especially when it comes to your head. Prices seem to vary wildly from £20 to £140. The reason Iwas asking for good brands was to narrow it down to say 2 or 3 makes to then go to a shop that stocks them and try on.

If you had to rank the top 3 in order of helmet makes, what would they be ??

That's really difficult to do, there are several very good brands and models and, for example, I love my Giro Atmos and think it's the best, but it might nor fir you well and you'll think it is an utter piece of cack.

Find a local shop that has a variety of helmets, find the ones that fit best within your price range.
When you have narrowed it down to fit/comfort then choose the one that you like the look of the best. They are all much of a muchness in terms of quality of manufacture and ventilation...

Spesh make some really good helmets but let themselves down by not selling replacement helmet pads. After a certain amount of sweating you'll want to replace the pads (my pads are now 2 years old and are minging!). I won't recommend one brand over another but would suggest you buy some replacement pads at the same time you buy the helmet. If that manufacturer doesn't sell spare pads then try another one.

I tried a few on when i first bought one, tried them in my LBS and liked price/fit of the Bell Array, excellent for the money and cools your head good.

You have to try them though as some bells would fit some to large in same size ??
    Specialized Epic FSR Carbon Comp
  • thanks to everyone for the advice. I will follow it and find a LBS with a selection of makes and try them, just need to decide which shop now!

    thanks again :D

The best independent advice I found was here:

But as others have said, fit first and foremost, then as round a profile as possible. For what it's worth I've got a Casco Passion.

Ive got a Giro Monza, does a very good job and fits really well... more luck than anything else though as I ordered it offline without trying it. I tried a friends Specialized and it didnt fit well....
