I'm busy building up a Surly Cross Check and in the interests of being different I was thinking of running it with down tube shifters and a 9 speed deore rear mech.

Does anybody know if this set up is likely to work OK, or am I heading into a world of hassle getting the damn things to index?

Assuming you're buying Shimano shifters, no problem.

    Thanks,

I'll press on an give it a go then. Nothing like a bit of old school gearshift action!

9-speed with friction shifters? Won;t that make changing a bit hit or miss? I use a downshifter on my five speed commuter, and can miss gears (and I only use 3 and 5!). Six would be maximum, surely?

9 speed downtube shifters are generally indexed...
