Timetrial position

After doing a couple i want to lower my handlebars to get more aero (i've heard this is the most cost effective way of knocking some seconds off, other than training (which i am doing)). But how low is to low? do i just do it bit by bit until i am uncomfortable? How much lower is the handdle bars than the seat for your 'average' time trial position? i know alot of this is down to personal comfort issues and flexibility but i am just wondering what else people are doing.

Any criticism welcome.

Go as low as is comfortable but don't forget that what might feel too low now will be fine after a few weeks of riding as your muscles strengthen and adapt. Having said that, lower is not always more aero. Search on-line for some articles on how to get an aerodynamic riding position. You may be suprised at how small adjustments can make a big difference.

Going low on the drops is not very aero. You are actualy better on the hoods with your forearms parallel to the ground. The photo shows tribars on my normal road bike position but you can see that the position would be similar (but not as comfortable) on the hoods with the arms lowered. Hands on the drops creates more drag from the whole arm.
