Apologies if i'm asking stupid questions, but I haven't got a clue! I nvested in a Raleigh Aventi U6 Pro recently http://www.raleigh.co.uk/b_details.aspx?id=547

but got the sizings totally wrong. I am now considering part chopping for a trek 1.7 (09 model). The RRP for the raleigh is £1299 compared to the Trek's £925. My question is what's the difference? To my limited knowledge, the gears etc seem the same, and the frame and forks seem to be pretty much the same. What am I getting on the Raleigh that I'm not on the Trek, and is the raleigh worth nearly £400 more?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

The main difference is the fact the raleigh has a carbon rear triangle, the trek is all aluminium.

    Thats about it.

Thanks for that......hadn't noticed! One more question. If you had the choice between the two, and money wasn't an issue, which would you choose? Would the carbon rear end mean the raleigh got the nod?

Neither, to be honest. For £1300 you could do better. Out of interest, are you actually limited to one or t'other?

For a similar price you could pick up a 2008 Trek Madone 4.5 (we have a 56cm for £1400). For a little less you have the Trek 1.9 with full Ultegra groupset

To be honest I've only got about £900 to spend. I can get another Raleigh at this price, so wondered if that would be a better option than the Trek 1.7. The RRP is obviously higher, but it concerns me that I've had it on e-bay twice and although there were people watching, no one bid. It's like brand new and I started it at £675.

I've seen 2008 trek 1.7 models on e-bay recently that have gone up to £5-600 so thought that might be better option for future sell on value.

The local bike shop have offered me £650 for my Raleigh as a part chop for the trek. Another option is sell it privately (eventually!) and re-invest in another raleigh at reduced price, or buy something else in the £900 bracket. From reading various trek 1.7 reviews (08 model) it seems that thats one of the best bikes under the £1000 mark.

My other option is sell it eventually, continue riding my first bike, (a £250 Viking Milano! )
and spend the £600-900 on a bloody good holiday!

Difficult situation noidea to be honest.

I think you need to bite the bullet with the Raleigh tbh and sell it on ebay at a lower starting price.

giuilliano, it's coming on ta, slowly but surely.

Going to try for an actual ride on Sunday for 20 mins or so just round the estate. Bit nervous!

I have a similar problem I bought a Trek 1.7 2008 56cm last year after much discussion with various LBS as to should I get a 54cm or 56cm in the end I was sold a 56cm and now think it's too big, if I sold it on ebay I'd lose out massively and as you've found might out even be able to sell it.

Arse!!! I blame the LBS who sold it to me, they had a responsibility to fit me correctly, instead they palmed my off with what they had in stock which I might add was really badly set up so much so the tyres weren't even properly pumped up when I left the shop and the gears completely not indexed, me being totally new to cycling had no idea at the time.

Still I know a lot more now

I have a 08 Trek 1.7 and i paid 800 quid with loads of extra's incite computer, pump, helmet etc. Was my first road bike.

If i had the choice again i would go fully carbon. As now i'm doing the daily commute from High Wycombe to Slough 5 times a week and always think on them hills and bumps, "If only Carbon"

I would say pay 1 Grand and try a Focus or Boardman fully carb bike.

I still believe that if you buy a Trek 1 Series you will always be thinking if only it was a Madone.

Its too much money for an Ali bike when a Carbon can be yours for a similar price.

What about just getting yourself properly fitted and have everything taken off the Raleigh to another frame. That way you could just take the hit on eBay for the Raleigh frame only.

You have got everything you need and a decent mechanic shouldn't charge much to put it all on another frame especially if he is selling it to you.

I would not get fixated on the carbon stays etc: you have made the worse mistake you can by buying a wrong sized frame.

I'd do what bice suggests. Have a look at Kinesis frames for example. But do make sure you're properly measured / fitted so you end up with the correct size frame this time.
