It is time for the spring ritual of buying a few bikey things for the gf so she'll come out on longer rides with me; she is an occasional cyclist who has the basics, but I was going to get her a few snazzier things that look nice. I'm not foolish enough to get her actual clothes  but I was thinking maybe the Terry liner shorts from Minx (she doesn't wear the lyrcra... yet) and some snazzy gloves and (possibly) a pretty bottle. But minx have stopped doing the smart ones they had. Boo.

Any woman-centric bling ideas would be well received!

well if the bike is sorted? then clothes it is, some nice mitts if she wears a helmet a cooler one?

maybe a nice water bottle or two?

i'd go for some nice tops my self, or possibly shoes it a) seems to be a common female weaknes and B) can make a big differnce.

but the main thing is i'd make sure she was in control. her pace and where.

Cute Terry bolero (available from the ever-marvellous Minx) can be worn with vest top on the bike and at yoga classes and the like?

But whilst I like Terry tops, I do not like the Terry shorts. I find the padded shorts/longs very uncomfortable (the positioning and bulkiness of the paddedness is just wrong somehow) - and I've never found any other brand (I have owned specialised, nike & sugoi) uncomfortable so I don't think it's me / my saddle.

I would give a massive vote to these shorts (not just cos they're named after me, honest) http://www.harlotwear.com/oliviashort.htm which don't look like cycling shorts if you're wearing htem in public but are super comfy and make your arse look good (aor so I'm told).

Or how about a merino top?

Roger, was thinking the mitts. Shoes possibly a good idea, though she's got basic flatty pedals so wears her tennis trainers...

Londonlivvy, those shorts look nice! Merino top, hmm. A base layer isn't technically clothes is it?

Actually, how do I convert dress (and knicker) sizes into S, M, L, etc?

    Hi,
How about an intro to lycra by getting her a skort. Terry do some with the lycra padded shorts attached and they are really comfy: Plus they look cute^, and when you get off for a cake stop/arrive at work you don't feel so totally exposed to the gawps!! 8)

    s=anything size 8 and below
m=10 & 12 (If the cut is generous then it could also be a 14)
L=anything 16 and above definitely(However if she is a 14 and likes a looser fit, then go with L)

    Hope that helps!

Model name rather than brand, right?

stiffer shoes for the keen, give more power, or at very least feel like they do, but also mean that the pedal doesn't bite into ones feet after a few miles as can happen, ie just because she has flatties doesn't mean that one can't get bike ish shoes, MTB/BMX as you'd imagine.

    Ah!

I have sent a link to one of the cycling dresses on Minx as a Sekrit Test to my gf...

Biondino, do you have a link to pink pedals? I know you do.

    Eeeesh, I don't know!

Being a girl, you'd think I'd be full of ideas. I'd buy her a jersey, but you say she doesn't do lycra...

I require more information about her bike and the riding she does at present!

I disagree on the sizing thing - every cycle brand seems to vary - I've been everything from an S to an XL, depending on the brand. Generally speaking, German brands are more generous (ie I get to be a S) and Italian brands the opposite (curse them for making me an XL).

So... check out on Next or other normal UK clothing website the inches they allow for your g/f's size (ie if she's a 12, then it'll be 36 inch bust, 38 inch hips) and then compare to the cycle manufacturer's website. Sounds a bit convuluted, I realise, but I'm SURE you're aware of the perils of buying your g/f clothes that are the wrong size.

    And Biondino... indeed.

Get a GF who's the same height as you are. She can then share all your tops (except I'm the only one who wears pink).

Suogi do a kind of hockey skirt with built in padded shorts which is quite comfortable by all accounts.

I had a gf who was the same height as me (6 foot). She used to wear a lot of my clothes, in particular jeans. Ultimately, though, this useful fact wasn't *quite* enough to make the relationship functional. Ah well. My new gf is 6 inches shorter than me but she's already given me a t-shirt and a jacket of hers, both of which fit perfectly, as well as an emergency loan of a rather small cardy :)

my wife who is 8 inches shorter wears a fair amount of my clothes tops, ie jumpers etc. trousers would look a tad silly.....

Sternness not intentional... was supposed to be a coy answer to a cheeky question. But I seem to be accidentally offending people left, right and centre today. Eek.I foresee an early night.

You didn't offend me - after all, I did "hilariously" question your good character :)

But as I don't actually know you I just wanted to make sure you weren't thinking "what a c0ck". Or, at least "god he's even more of a c0ck than I previously thought he was", which is probably more likely.

Nah. Not remotely offended. Thought it was amusing actually. And was going to try and make some witty remark about goodness my reputation has travelled fast etc and then I couldn't think of anything funny. ....

Anyway... back to the subject at hand... I also LOVE Sugoi fizz tops. Much recommended. But do bear in mind that not everything must be pink in order to be popular with the girls. Some of us are partial to other colours. Red. Purple. Blue. etc.

Different colours NOT pink? Livvy are you SURE?!

But all the ideas are great peeps! Biondino, and LiT I am impressed! I am def getting her pink pedals, if purely to annoy her. 8)

Oh and the gf is a strictly sunday/leisure cyclist (at the mo). We do summery rides (half an hour to an afternoon). We generally have a picnic halfway through, or stop at a restaurant near a railway station and drink fine (okay lots of) wine. Also we stop for smooching fairly often. Does that help?

Also she is about 6 inches shorter than me...
