Apologies - car insurance query

My missus is looking to get her car, which is irish reg, changed over to british reg, and to that the DVLA want to see British insurance.

Problem is that with a non-british numberplate every insurer we contact doesn't want to know about us, until of course we have one! Then they'll be happy to help....

Anyone been through this PIA process and know an insurer who can offer a policy for a useful length of time (longer than 7 days) and for a reasonable price (Quinn would do it but only for £1,070 for a year for a Yaris, extortionate!)

TIA

Might be a really silly question, but have you got a UK MOT on it?

If not that would be the first step... also, were you looking for TPFT cover or fully comp? If it's only temporary, TPFT might do you and would be cheaper.

Adrian Flux are often good for the more unusual request... I understand that some insurers will cover a foreign plated car on the chassis/VIN number until registration is achieved, so that might also be a route to explore...

I went through this when I moved over, but I don't remember any problem like this.

For the first year I had it insured on Irish plates with Endsleigh. After that I also had to get it registered in the UK, which had the slight snag of needing to get the car through some sort of "super-MOT" because Toyota, it seems, hadn't got that type of car approved in the UK or something. Once that was done it was all straight forward though, but I guess the car was insured at the time.
    Maybe give Endsleigh a call?

Went to call Endsleigh but after their operating hours....maybe try again tomorrow. We're having to sort out the compliance for the UK as well, will have to get the paperwork from the DVLA equivalent in ireland to give to Toyota Ireland to give to the DVLA here....bl*oody bureaucracy.

Thanks also for the suggestion LiT!

Whatcha need to do is find an insurance company that will offer cover for while you get the vehicle registered over here, it'll cover you to bring it over then take it for an MOT if needed. You also need to get it re registerd over here with the dvla this should only take to weeks or so, then, the insurance company can issue you a full policy on the uk reg and hey presto sorted.

There used to be loads of companies that did this but with the changes to the motor insurance database rules some companies don't do it anymore. Directline used to when I worked there but that was four years ago Norwich Union can do but only if your an existing customer.

Best bet might be to try a broker like endsleigh.

I think theres a guide on the DVLA website to tell you who to contact and that.

Hope that helps, pm me if you need any more info.

Thanks all, looks like Endsleigh will be able to help us out with a policy that will cover us for 30 days while we get the UK reg sorted out, which should be enough (fingers crossed)

Ironic, in online searches for this exact topic, the response from car based discussion groups I found were useless, the useful knowledge has come from fellow cyclists!
