Is anywhere else as 'anti-social' as Britain?

I gave up working in the retail trade after 20 years because of the abuse and violence. I understand when people have a grievence and might be upset, that is to be expected but what I don't understand is the personal abuse and attacks. What right in any walk of life does anyone have the right for a few pounds to threaten someone with violence against them or their family? I don't know if anyone remembers the case of a 16yo shop worker being stabbed to death over 50p's worth of goods. This was the turning point for me, I had had several 'customers' get physical and I thought it was only a question of time before my number came up. One of the worst retail experiences I ever had was having to phone the mother of one of my staff after he had been battered across the face with a 4 foot length of 2"x2" when he chucked out a kid who was trying to shoplift. The kid went home, told his older brother who came back and assulted the staff member. The lad was in hospital for weeks with head injuries, broken upper and lower jaws and most of his teeth gone. I suppose the customer is always right then?Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

When I did my university holiday job, the customers sometimes blamed me for the price of goods that I was selling, as if it were somehow my fault. Customers can be such twats sometimes.0

I'll never forget a case that came up when I worked in a shop in Glasgow. A staff member was admitted to hospital after being stabbed in the hand with a used syringe for refusing to exchange a customer's phone that was obviously damaged. Said staff member was in the right and treated the customer with respect and apologised that they couldn't help, but would send the handset off for a repair quote. a couple of months later the staff member was diagnosed with HIV. Not long after that the customer was sent to prison for attempted murder as they had stabbed the staff member knowing that they were HIV positive.
On a lighter note...... I also remember a customer who got incredibly angry at me because their phone wasn't working. They came in shouting and demanding a refund. I explained that the handset was 4 months old and that I'd be happy to have it repaired at no cost and loan them a phone in the meantime, but I couldn't exchange it as it was outside the contracted period. At this they got even more angry, slamming the phone and reciept onto the counter with a lot of force "there's my f***ing reciept, I want a f***king refund now you untc!". I then kindly suggested they take it back to Carphone Warehouse where they had purchased the now damaged handset.
You gotta love retail work!0
