Sorry to hear about the MTB.

Second Hand is usually best value at a low budget but it's best if you know what you are looking at/for, or are with someone who does...

If you have a Decathlon sports store near you and they have some reasonable bikes in their current sale for less than £500.

+1. You can get decent 105/Ultegra equipped bikes that are a few (say, 3-10) years old for as little as £300 or less. You need to watch Gumtree and keep an eye on ebay, especially bikes which are "local pickup only" as they sell for less.

If your employer could be persuaded to join the Cycle 2 Work Scheme your choicesoptions would then be significantly improved. Your £500 budget would then probably convert to a budget of approximately £1000 instaed, (I think). Might take a little while to set up though.

Make the effort if thats what you want - surely someone can give you a lift up the M5 to brum (1 hour drive /)- there is a decathlon at Merry Hill - you can phone ahead to see what stock they have - and if they don't have it - they can get it in advance of your trip, with no obligation.

I`d get in quick if I were you.Due to the price hikes affecting all bikes, the new Decathlon bikes were significantly more than the sale ones.

A Tiagra equipped bike is now £800,whereas last years bike was around £500 for example.

You could try a Giant SCR or one of the entry level Dawes, Claud Butler or Raleigh models. Make sure you can fit mudguards, otherwise commuting will be unpleasant.
