UK bikes - where are they all?

I have just received a call from my LBS saying that the bike I ordered 2 weeks go (which was meant to be in yesterday) has been delayed for another 3 weeks as there is none in stock!! The bike is a Trek 1.9 (60cm) and I had no idea that it would be so difficult to get one.

Has anyone else had any issues with lack of stock or can anyone advise as to whether a 5 week period is standard for delivery....surely not?

I am 6' 3" and after visiting 2 shops, one said I should get a 62cm bike but the one I ordered from were more comprehensive and said a 60cm would do.

So my question is if I could get a 62cm in stock should I consider taking it? :?:

    Dunno, depends which fits better...
You will (hopefully) be riding the bike for a few years so what's a few weeks to wait for a bike the right size? Better than a couple of weeks extra riding a bike that doesn't fit.

If the 62 fits better and it's in stock, double bonus!!

Thanks and I know what you mean bt the 60cm bike had the seat out quite so I thought if the seat on the 62 was reduced slightly then my reach to teh bars woudl be similar!

I'm not going to be competing or looking to break any records so 2cm to me is minimal and I'm keen to get it sooner rather than later.

Call me stupid but I just thought 2cm wouldn't be a huge difference!! (and before anyone says it, I know 2cm is a lot to some people  )
  • I'm 6' 4" myself and have begrudgingly got used to a world built for little people. Hotel beds, quaint village pubs, aeroplane seats, etcetcetc. They're all a pain in the neck, back, noggin. When it comes to the bike don't accept a frame size that'll 'do'. If you haven't already I'd recommend that you pay a bit and get measured for a bike. Your back will thank you. Pain sucks the speed from your legs. The slower you go the colder it gets.

And then it rains. Checkout the cycling on Eurosport. Speed=Sunshine.
If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.

2cm is a lot when it comes to bike fit. I have tried a 58 and 60cm Trek Madone and the 60cm felt enormous to my 6'1 frame. At 6'3 you could ride either, but I'd say the same as above..... if the 60cm feels better to ride wait for that. £1150 is a VERY expensive mistake

Well what do you know...after calling around I discovered that there were 3 60cm 1.9's available in the UK, I called my LBS and told them the news. They then told me that because I am in Northern Ireland, they get all of their stock from Dublin and not the UK!! I then said that this is crazy and kicked off saying how dissapointed I was.

Surprise surprise, they called me this monring saying that they "pleaded" with their Dublin suppliers who have agreed to get one from the UK for Monday meaning I will have it on Tuesday :) Mind you it's a double instead of a triple....will it make a huge difference?

Not that I'm worried, just glad I have my bike for the bank holiday weekend bike run...WHOO HOO!!
