Have you seen the first post? "In my view cyclists should cycle on the pavement. Yes there is a risk of them hitting pedestrains but they could be banned from shopping precients"

It looks as though this poster has suffered head injuries as well

It would be funny if it wasn't for the poor guy lying in hospital :(

I had a night of t**tish comments from colleagues in work about being a cyclist. one saying that we have no right to be on the roads and that we should stay on the cycle paths, another complaining that we are all green nutters and that we should 'get a car', I pointed out that I had a car and a motorbike but I chose to cycle out of fitness, the fact that I can park my bike at work unlike him and his car and that I save myself £500 a year on a gym membership which he has just paid out for.

One went so far as so say that it serves us right if we are knocked off our bikes while out on the roads because we don't pay road tax or insurance (I pay insurance on my bike which includes personal liablity)

so it seems that many motorists see is as fair game because we have decided to use a free form of transport which isn't taxed after delivery and because we can overtake them.

    chuffed I was not

Only one person defended me and they rounded on him saying he had no right to complain about them because he's a surfer!!

I'd hate to be on the pavement. You just cant travel at a decent speed, plus theres the stop start of crossing the roads. We belong on the road.

NGale I know how that feels, they all now see it my way though after a fair few years doing it. I have a little cash to spare compared to those who drive (I dont officially drive, lol, only a provisional - though my Uncle and Father taught me in a private car park as a kid - hate to see how I'd get on now)

There are one or two really good, down to earth posters on that website. Miles Sway is one and he seems to be pretty grounded, and a couple of other cyclists pop on there.

Oh no not another cyclist knocked off and now suffering life threatening injuries............How much longer will this carnage go on before something is done?

Best not to start insisting that something is done. The logical way to stop cyclists being hurt on the roads is to stop them using the roads. Bad plan. Sh!t happens. We all look and think 'there but for the grace of god' etc but ultimately we use the roads and take the risk.

Interesting how wound up motorists get by just being in the presence of cyclists - must be all that fresh air and no road tax

Did you report them to HR? imagine if it was for some other reason, say that you were a Christian and they said all Christians should be shot, wouldn't that be a sackable offence? what's the difference.

IMO There should be zero tolerance of this sort of behaviour in a workplace.

No......... I don't think so. Just because cyclists choose to cycle on the roads as we are legitimately entitled to we don't consent to being knocked down when it happens. Something does need to be done - education of both drivers and cyclists and much stiffer penalties for those drivers whose vehicles collide with cyclists.

Blimey no - holding ridiculous views isn't a sacking offence - I'd probably be unemployable if everybody took that approach, the grassing to HR route to resolve disagreements. I pointed out to her in no uncertain terms what an absolutely cretinous view hers is, and put her right on a few other things too, like road tax, insurance, the numerous +ve aspects of cycling to work as opposed to driving. She now has a more accomodating view of cyclists & cycling, rather than being a confirmed hater of them since one got her sacked.

Maybe something does need to be done, but whenever the phrase 'something must be done' comes into earshot, it's a racing certainty that the likeliest outcome is not the one that would benefit cyclists in any big way. Restrictions, new laws, more of the view that cyclists don't really belong on the roads as it's too dangerous. It can only go one way.

quote me wrong if I am but isn't there some historical law where road use by light vehicles is what roads were intended for and when the car came along users pay to have the privilege to use such roads?

or was someone just pulling my leg?

Sometimes it is we cyclists that need to do it anyway. Politely challenging people misconceptions, educating those new to commuting and the sport sides of cycling and actually speaking up about that which puts our lives at risk.

Sadly we have little control over the punitive sides of things

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man, was not injured.

Gee that was a surprise. Was it in any doubt?
