Removing stickers?

Anyone recommend a good, clean and non-toxic way of removing factory stickers/decals from a bike frame. It's a steel frame, and the stickers have taken most of the knocks. I seem to remember a technique involving a hair dryer and warming the stickers, but beyond that I don't know.

If they've been lacquered over then you will have problems, however if the stickers are over the frame lacquer then a hair dryer and defunct credit card etc should suffice.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

followed by some solvent to remove the gum. Car polish works fine.
