Anyone else nearly ridden over a snake, last year an adder reared up at me on a land rover track up in the Cheviots, today first of the year, another adder basking in the sun stretched out across the track, had a real fright really wicked seeing them.

I saw an adder on Saturday whilst out riding on the Chase - it's the first I've seen this year. We'd already stopped when we spotted him, so he was safe from our wheels.
Bizarrely, I went to a trail building session today and saw a lizard!0 -
One reason why I like nice slow XC rides is to see the flora and fauna. Big dragonflies, deer, lizards, pheasants, alligators - all good.0

On my very 1st "MTB" holiday when I was around 6, we stopped off at the side of the old converted railway tracks. Obviously as a kid I started kicking over rocks etc and found LOADS of lizards
the reason I remember this like it was yesterday is either that or the fact that my dad managed to push me off my bike into a ditch full of nettles0 -
I remember when I went to Florida for 3 weeks out in the suburbs - the amount of lizards was phenomenal! They were so used to them, but to me I kept thinking I was seeing big spiders!0

actually.. I got hit by a spastic wood pigeon today!
Taking the photo's earlier today (sorry about no helmet) a big fat pigeon failed to negotiate a branch landing.... *crack**snap**woosh* "ouch my back"!
Even got a photo of the thing!!
poked it a few times and then it flew off0 -
Wood pigeons are incredibly dumb. Quite tasty too.
I torment them with my laser pen.0 -
they sell them in the local butchers
Look pretty tasty but the GF wouldn't touch it0 -
very good in a pie with a Hare or a Rabbit."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I stumbled across some deer a few days back.... the daft idiots decided to run down the path in front rather than into the trees so ended up with them in front for about 500m.... all goodFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0

Not a snake but I did run over some sort of Stoaty type thing a few years back on the Ridgeway. Sort of like a furry brown tube with legs at each end, I went over the middle bit between the two sets of legs, its belly I guess. It seemed ok didnt even stop running,"Didn't hurt"0

Many years ago I was on a geology field trip in Hollyhead. We were walking over a tussocky field and I nearly stepped on an adder. The only thing that stopped me was because he was curled up next to a small glass bottle which had caught my eye. After doing a weird skipping jump to avoid the snake we all gathered round it thinking it was dead. The poor animal saw himself being surrounded and made a dash for it...We all scattered in different directions. Pure comedy. I've got a photo of it some where, I'll see if I can dig it up.
Picked up a rock once when I was in France on a different field trip. As I was examining the rock I turned it over and to my horror found a large black scorpion on the other side of it. After chucking the rock and leaping about like a monkey I ran off to get my camera. On returning my friend was trying to stop it from escaping with a thin stick. He got the stick stuck in a rock and as it bowed it flicked the scorpion straight towards me and it whizzed past my head.
My geology stories can go on and on..
Edited due to crappy spelling :x0 -

Managed to drop the front wheel onto an Adder after one of my pathetic wheelies. I was gutted it was the first one I have ever seen in this country! It seemed OK though.
Nearly hit a huge black snake at Shark Valley in the Everglades, loads of Gators too, a couple were lying right beside the cycle path. The rental bikes had a back pedal brake and there is no way you could have made a quick getaway as the brake takes a fair bit of force to unstick  !Shot by both sides...0 -
Thought I was the only one, accidently ran over one at Kielder early May. It got a bit angry and nearly bit the riders behind me..
Apparantley according to Northumbrain Water there are a lot around this year so watch out!.0 -
