hi guys, ive got a 2004 model scott high octane freeride.. i know its quite old now, but i bought it in 05 and havent riden it due to my health for two and a half years.. infact after my previous bike which i rode everyday this ones like new

anyway im looking at getting back into it but need to sort a problem ive had since ive had the bike, im a lard ars*ed rider and the manitou sherman forks it came with are way to soft for me.. a few years ago i tried to get a firming kit for it but no one had stock.. here or in the states..

so now im thinking ill invest in a new set of forks and am after some reccomendations.. there are a few things that will effect my choice so i thought id put it to you guys and see what you think..

firstly my current 2004 manitou sherman (i think breakout) forks have a big steerer, much larger than normal forks so ill need a fork the same size.. ive looked for specs on them to find the size but cant find anything.. anyone know?

secondly, even though before my health problems i rode daily for 11 years even commuting to work i dont know how much ill be using the bike now so i dont want to spend a fortune,,

thirdly, to suit my current setup itll need to be a 20mm axle and disc brake compatible

lastly ill need a fork that can either be tightened up so a lard arse like me doesnt bob around like a fool or one i can get a firming kit for

any ideas?

did you not get the 11/8 alternative head tube with the bike? you should have done so.

a bit late to go back now and ask for it though. are you sure it is not in a box somewhere along with the head tube angle adjusting spanner?

the headtubes cam in black and silver, yours should be silver and will be a 1.5" one.

well even if you dont have it you can fit reducing headsets to allow you to run a 1 1/8th steerered fork.

Basically any fork with 150-160mm of travel will suit the frame.

if i chage the steerer tube wont that mean a new headset as well?

yes but it does open up a lot more forks.

  • RS Domain is a nice fork.
160mm comes in 1.5" steerer variety if you don't want the hassle of changing the steerer tube and headset :)

Its also 20mm bolt thru and the internal spring can be swapped out to suit rider weight.
