Replacing the steerer on forks

I think I remember seeing on here someone mention you can get steerers replaced on forks.
You see, i've seen some Recon's but the steerer is only 6 and a half inches long.
I can't find the post now, anyone heard of this?

Think its more trouble than its worth.
Best of finding a set of forks with the correct steerer length.0 -
26 quid for some Recon 351's though!
I'd have about an inch popping out the top of the headset, do you reckon i could get round it with a different headset and no risers??0 -
ummm.. I wouldn't personally.
As nick always says, you need to make sure the top of the steerer is on or above the top bolt on your stem so that you don't put too much pressure on it.
If you take all the spacers out and fit a lower stack headset, your bars are going to be very very low.0 -
Yeah, i thought that too.
26 quid though, hmmmmmmmmm.
I could just get some HUGE bars. :shock:0 -
You could try your local welders etc to see if they'd be able to help you out. I doubt any welds would be as strong as the original though.
Plus you'd have to find the correct size steerer metal tube from somewhere0
