shimming out a disc ..

I intend to start cycling to work, so I bought some brand new spanking wheels with hope II hubs on for the tough stuff. The old wheels are going to be used for slicks.

So everyone changed over today, everything works ... apart from dis drag. Stupidly I thought having hopes on both set of wheels (although on the old wheels the are more "vintage") that everything would be in the same place ... buts its not!!

So can I shim out the disc brake on the rear (the front is marginal) using the Hope shims used for the disc brake mount ... or is there any other solution??

Re-centering the caliper would be the 1st thing I'd do. If you are at the limit of the calliper's movement then you could use shims.

Park tools have some good repair guides: http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion ... Field2.y=9

The brakes will need to be bedded in again & the marginal drag on the front may stop after it's bedded in again.

Nowt wrong with putting little shims behind the discs as required, saves having to re-centre the caliper every time you change wheels

I think these are what you need I have them on one of my wheel sets and they let you swap wheels without re-adjusting the caliper every time

edit: thats odd cant get link to work but just go onto e-bay and search for syntace rotor shims

Velosoloshop sell similar for cheaper, depends on how far you need to shim. The Sintace shims are 0.2mm, VeloSolo sell 1.0mm shims.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Read the park guide - when you say re-centre the caliper - do you have or could you give a bit more info ... ?
I thought spacers was the only way to line things up ...

well it depends on what you wabt to do and what brakes (make/model and year).

centering the caliper would be done if you are onlu going to use the ned wheels. but if you are going to use both then you would set the caliper to one and shim the disc to suit on the other set.

So what are you trying to do with what?

  • hope II hubs ( new )
    On a One One 456
Revelation forks so IS mount fore and aft
    Hope mono M4s

    Old wheels

Hope XC (or older as 5 bolt rear - front 6 bolt and livable with)
Obviously same bike and same brakes

    203 rotors at front
180s at the back - all genuine Hope ( supposedly)

IS mounted - no post mount option
    No adaptor at the back

    at last.

Ok first make sure the bearings in the old wheels are good as if they are worn you will need to reset everything after changing the bearings.

then you need to see which wheel set has the rotors closer to the frame. then set the calipers (with shims) to suit those wheels. then on the other set you will need to shim the discs out to match the other hubs.

Hope do (did) 6 bolt spacers at 1 and 2.5mm and syntace do a pack of 10 X 0.2mm spacers.

On the old 5 bolt hub you will have to use somthing else if needed.
