edited April 2009 in Road buying advice
im kinda new to road bikes and the purchasing of replacement parts so after a few too many puntures on my giant scr 3 2008 and a good read up on the rims supplied with the bike i found them to be utter shite.
im looking at replacing both front and back rim and new tyres while im at it , but only snag im on a very tight budget due to my hours been slashed at work.
can someone please point me to a mega bargain that will blow me away ( yes away not "off") so i can get back on the road ?.
i only do about 50-80 mile a week so they wont be getting a pounding.
any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about the rims for now..... if they work then they are fine for now. As for tyres, I'd go for Conti Ultrasport protection. Not heavy and good puncture protection

Quest Como's for £69.98 + tyres and tubes should be done for under a 100 quid.

    They're reputedly fairly strong & competent budget wheels - other options include RS10's/RS20's/R550's/WH-5600's/PlanetXModel B's/Racing 5 Evo's.

I use an 08 SCR3 for my 5 mile commute to work and have done for 16 months with no problems with the wheels. Except i had to buy a new rear wheel when i fitted a rack and was carrying two reasonbly heavy panniers (work clothes, lunch box and my xbox 360). The spokes were the problem then though. Not sure on exact count but it was the radial pattern rather than cross lace that caused two spokes to break in two weeks. I wouldn't bother with upgrading the wheels unless they start going wrong,
Specialized Armidillos, Schwalbe Marathon, Conti Gatorskins, good puncture resistant tyres.
  • I'd snap his hand off for the aksiums.
The alex rims are crap, I've just had to retire mine off 3k worth of commuting, worth looking at the mp3 extended warranty too on the mavics. Thats what I've just gone onto

    Hey there,

I have WH-R550 wheels, which have made a big improvement to my SCR.

Check out these RS20 wheels. They are supposed to be quite good. They also have RS10wheels at a hundred quid, delivered.

    Cheers

ok chaps after hours of reading and reviews and with my tight budget my straight forward question is :-

( got my finger on the checkout button on both )

    1) :- SHIMANO WH-RS20'S
    or
    2) :- Mavic Aksium's 09
    ??
plus i weigh around the 95kg mark.

(took my finger off now , started to hurt after the first hour)
