Long sleeve jersey recommendation?

I'm doing the Marmotte in July and have just watched Mike Cotty's DVD - I'm now in a state of mixed fear and excitement!

He was riding it (in August, in a day that was a bit cooler than usual, apparently) in short sleeve jersey, arm warmers and long sleeve jersey on top; he was taking the long sleeve jersey on and off and handing it to his support car.

Here, I ride in various weathers in various combinations of jersey, arm warmers, gilet, jumper (cheap quality, but does the job, from Tchibo), waterproof shell etc. I don't have a light but warm/windcheating long sleeve jersey.

I had been planning to ride the Marmotte with short sleeve jersey, arm warmers and gilet, but am now figuring this may not be warm enough. So, can anyone
a) advise whether I'm right now to be thinking that I need something warmer to wear on top of my short sleeve jersey
b) recommend something that will do the job, but will be small enough to pack down in my jersey back pocket?

Assos Intermediate jersey is a top bit of kit or something similar or armwarmers and gilet will do the job

I dont think you'll need a long sleeve jersey unless you hit foul weather - 9/10 times - s/s arm warmers and a gilet or a light rain jacket will do the business. Get the thermal armwarmers - better warmth than plain lycra, and you can roll them up or down in an instant.

As to kit choice - check out the reviews on the main BR site - I think they had a nice DHB gilet on there recently.

You can always take one of those Montane Featherlite velo in case things turn nasty. Cheap and good quality :)

You should be ok with short sleeve jersey, armwarmers and lightweight soft shell (mainly for the descent of the Galibier). Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if it looks god this should be ok.

If the weather looks less favourable then bundle up with the windstopper kit as it can be very cold at altitude. Better to be too hot than too cold!

    Good luck!

2nd the intermediate jersey. The best jersey I have ever had and very versatile.

Have been looking for a long sleeved jersey for early morning rides / commutes. I have an old Nalini top with Windproof front and Roubaix back that works but is now (after over 10 years) falling apart. I have tried a short sleeved jersey over a long sleeved base layer with and without a Gilet, but my arms get really cold.

Everywhere I seem to look, the Assos Intermediate comes up, but at £140 I am struggling to justify the spend.

What is it that makes it so much better than other like the Girodana Technical Bland Silverline? Both are rated to the same temparature range, but there is a £100 difference in price! Be interested in people's thoughts.
  • I've done 4 Marmotte's no and never needed anything more than the crummy arm-warmers you get free when you sign on and a throwaway gilet for the descent off the top of the Galibier (once, there was still snow on the road and a temperature of 5 degrees) and I took that off at the turn onto the Lauteret. If you do take anything that could be considered over and above, make sure it's something you can carry round easily, or ditch without recrimination.

Full zip s/s jersey well worth the investment too.

Airblock 851 is a winter weight windproof material - it's thicker and fleece backed. 799 is lighter but still just as windproof.

The 851 is used for the airJack and Fugu winter jackets, plus the winter gloves and bibtights.

799 is used on the spring/autumn items like the Intermediate Evo jersey and the Element Zero gilet.

The Element one is basically an airJack without the airblock material. It's useful but not as versatile as the Intermediate Evo.

I have been riding with an Element One for the last three years and it has been excellent. Want to buy another jacket for between now and the Autumn and it's a toss up between another E1 or the Intermediate Evo. Hmmm decisions ... doesn't help when Ribble have put up their prices again ....

I have the E1 and the Intermediate EVO. The intermediate with a good base layer can just as warm as the E1. Great for the british summer and those early morning sportive starts and then you can remove the base layer and the EVO is okay up to 20°C.

I just bought one of the ground effect merino long sleeve tops. About £40 I think ?

Nice kit for spring weather and after riding 70 miles in it on Sunday - with a backpack over the top - it smells as fresh as a daisy ! Great if you're riding a few days in a row and need minimal baggage.

And its 1/3 the price of the Rapha top - but I agree the Rapha top is nicer to look at.
