Having problems changing a gear cable. I can see the process and how it works and have changed cables on road bikes but for some reason can't get this to work. Threaded the cable put the bike in biggest gear (smallest ring on cassette) but when try to change up can't seem to get any tension on the cable until after at least 3 clicks of the shifter then after another 3 clicks the cable becomes too tight to shift any further. Changed the cable because thought it was frayed near the index knob on shifter but this wasn't the case when took the old cable out, this initial problem was the during a ride the bike wouldn't change into last two big gears it was as if the bike was 7 speed instead of 9 there was no click/ tension on last two gears on bike. Any suggestions tips would be welcomed.

  • Make sure the shifter is fully released before pulling the cable through?

Make sure the cable is seated correct in the shifter?

Make sure the outer cable ends are on fully and the cable is sat where it should be in the stops on the frame?

Other than that, I'm not sure, I changed mine the other day with no issues and no resetting of any adjustments. (5 minutes tops).

It sounds like something wasn't located correctly.
