I went over the handlebars on Wednesday night - nice sand desent, hit a large rock and my front wheel buried in the sand and *wallop* over I went..... :?

Nice soft landing in the sand, so apart from being a bit surprised (and winded!) I laughed and got back on and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the ride. But yesterday - and more so today - my shoulders are KILLING me!!! I can't reach up high and even picking up a cup of coffee hurts. I think I must have held onto my handlebars as I flipped over....

Anyway, I guess there are no ways to avoid this (apart from not hitting rocks  ) but any suggestions to either 'fall' better or fix my shoulders are welcome!!

  • Hanging onto the bars is a good reaction to have. Too many people throw hands out to break their fall and break wrists instead.

Yep, my other half was out of action for about 8 months last year due to various broken bones, so I am very concious about not having limbs flailing about if I come off (especially at speed)! Bloody well messes up your shoulders though!

    And thank you Weeksy :D

I think I'll steer away from the baby oil

Sounds like you may have done some damage to your rotator cuff, ouch. Hope it gets better soon, if not it might be worth getting it looked at.

Just looked up what a rotator cuff is and yes, I think I may have done a bit of damage there! I'm a firm believer that most things fix themselves wiith a bit of time, but if it carries on hurting i'll seek advice. Thanks :D

Yeah, I came off recently too, got some nice, deep (stil quite painful) gravel-rash scars to prove it too. Although I fell off to my left. It feels like the bit that goes into your shoulder - the ball-y bit - has smashed into the cup that holds it there. And it aches whenever I apply any kinda pressure (I do alot of weightlifting too). Time works pretty well to stop it hurting, but if it's really painfull after a week, go and see the doc.

You'll be alright! I keep trashing my shoulder everytime I have an SPD fall on slow moving group rides... *sigh*

It always recovers and then always breaks again when I go down on it...

I crash fall off at least once every 2 months. There was one occasion where if I had gotten a few metres further I might have flown over a bridge which wouldn't have been good.

In my opinion crashing is just pushing yourself and the bike to the limits and beyond (not always a good idea though, as it often requires new parts)

    Paraphrased from Lee McCormack.

The best way to learn how to fall is to throw yourself around when you're a kid. Assuming you're not three years old falling is going to suck.

Sounds like you probably did the best thing, don't try to break your fall with your hands (snap!) and just try to roll with it.

    Hope it's feeling better soon.

Careful... I took the same attitude a few years ago when I dislocated my shoulder canoeing, didn't get it checked and carried on with all my various sports. ... Several dislocations and an operation later and the only safe sport I've got left is road biking (for now). I went to hospital to see a consultant yesterday; he pushed his thumb into my shoulder joint and was able to bring it to the point of dislocation just like that!

In short ... visit your doctor!

You have my sympathies, did the same thing last Monday, over the bars. Was fine at the time but the following day the aches appeared. Slowly subsiding now. Funny how hurts more days later than it does at the time.

Conal_b is right though, a mate of mine crashed a good few years back, rode into a drystone wall (he was too busy laughing at me as I'd just gone over the bars when my front wheel buried itself in a rabbit hole, served him right really  ), was sore but got back on. Finally went to the doctors about 3 weeks later to discover he too had dislocated his shoulder. Similar thing has also just happened to my boss, hurt his finger sledging, left it for weeks, turns out his finger is broken, got a right telling off from the doctor for leaving it. So if it isn't better fairly soon go and make use of your tax dollars  .
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
