A prize* to anyone who can answer this:

I purchased some new bib shorts a couple of weeks ago and after one 30 mile ride I noticed wear on the front of the right thigh (it wasn't a problem because I got them changed). I then checked last years (harder wearing) shorts and noticed that they were wearing through in the same place. The full length bib tights I've been wearing all winter have no such wear

My bike set up hasn't changed, although I've changed my cleats a couple of times and the bike is perfectly comfortable to ride for prolonged periods without any aches or pains.

It can't be the shorts as its happened to exactly the same place on 2 different makes which are different quality and if it was the bike set up why haven't the bib tights got the same wear marks?

I've just spent 80 quid on some new bib shorts and I'm worried to wear them now in case I put the same wear mark on them :(

Any suggestions of possible answers would be gratefully appreciated.

* there isn't really a prize :wink:

The bib tights are made of a different material less prone to wear? Or as you sweat the fabric clings to your body more so can;t move around as much when it rubs on something, so causes more wear... you wore the bib tights through winter and it was colder so you didn't sweat as much and they wore less. I'm just making this stuff up as I go along here.

Winter full lengths tend to be thicker? They've probably worn in the same place too, just less noticeably.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Good try but I did some long (70 mile plus) rides in the tights so would epxect to have sweated as much and last years shorts are quite hard wearing.

The shorts are wearing at the top of the right thigh only. :?

Nope, I checked them thoroughly last night and there's not a mark on either pair. It could be something to do with the shorts ridding up as I cycle?

Is your thigh brushing your elbow on the "up-stroke"?

do you shave - stubble coming through?

do you stop and lean on anything?

do you ride with your (or maybe someone else's) hand on your thigh :D

did you wash the short vigorously to get a stain out

You hang to the right, and are so well endowed, its causing excessive stretching of the lycra in that area, ultimately leading to premature wear.

    Common problem.

You have an acid patch of skin of a similar strength to the baddies' blood on Aliens?
  • You don't have a saddle bag do you? My shorts were catching on the Velcro. Didn't realise till i'd worn a hole all the way through my best shorts.

Although well endowed the wear is on the outside rather than the inside :? same applies to acid skin.

Re the saddle bag the wear is on the front of the shorts

Don't think it is. Its in the middle of the leg rather than the outside. I think the material is rubbing between my leg and my stomach when I'm bent over  but it's only on one leg. Is it possible for a [small] beer belly to be lop sided?

More likely one legs bigger, but yes!
  • I would reckon that you have one leg slightly 'more developed' than the other, due to the body not being symmetrical and also, favouring of one side (are you right handed?). This might mean that (albeit unconsciously) you lean slightly more to the right and your leg brushes up against your [small] beer belly / very hard and well-defined stomach muscles :D

    Or batch78 was right

Could be on to something there. The problem is with my left leg and I am left footed so could have a slightlylarger left leg since my rugby/5-aside days. So what's the cure? If I muscle up the right leg I'll have the same problem with both legs

Perhaps the [almost undetectable] beer belly needs to become even less detecable to cure the problem. I'll discuss it with my mates later...when I'm down the pub
  • Chop your leg off?

Cycle with the other leg and let your left leg dangle freely?

Enjoy the pub-based discussions. I'm sure after a few pints, it will all become clear.

You've all missed the most obvious cause of the problem.

It's his right leg, so it's obviously being caused by the chainset.
