Hi i am new my name is Jason I am 27 now haven't been on my bike since I was 17 and passed my driving test. Amazingly my Specialized Rockhopper only needed two new inner tubes and some oil to get it going again after sitting in the shed for ten years  . I have been on my bike for three weekends running now with my mates and I have just realised how amazing it is. We recently went on a 30 mile bike ride from my house to surbiton lock which was great because it was sunny the only problem I had was walking the next day

  • I've caught it too after 9 years out. I've also caught some sort of crappy bug and can't go out on it today

Try eating lots of garlic and chilli it works for me when I catch a bug also stay hydrated to flush it out
  • I did the same not ridden for 10 years got back on the bike and realised what I had been missing. That was 3years ago and I'm still going strong. I was also 27yrs.

Every year I get fitter and quicker. 08/09 was the first year I kept riding all winter, I'm in the middle of a 10 day cycle holiday and still going strong.

I'm not yet a racer but it wont be long at this rate (but only for fun i could never compete).

Good luck with your riding I'm sure you'll be thinking about a full sus rig soon.

    Ride On!

yep already thinking full sus but can't afford it and I am not sure it will make that much difference anyway considering my very low level of fitness
  • yep i have started riding after about 15 years, I had two bikes stolen when i was 14 15 and gave up, got given an old cheap hybred from someone at work and just been playing on it. Sooo addictive I am goign to by myself a decent entry level bikes and get some more off road time in. Briliant fun!!

I'd guess 9 in 10 people who get back into biking stopped when they were around 16 to 18 and got a car lol. Its just that time in life when you leave school, maybe get a job, apprenticeship, go to collage or uni, get a little more freedom, start going out clubing, women......., maybe a little marijuana, go on your first lads holiday, Its that time of life when everything happens at once and there's little time or desire to go and get wet, muddy and exhausted on the old (probably clapped out as your skint) bike. lol.

10 Years later, everythings slowing down, you've done the whole clubbing thing and a quiet night in the pub is far more preferable. Chance to just chat with your mates rather than get your ears blasted out by over loud R&B that you cant stand. You've finished uni, completed your apprenticeship, and the exciting job is just becoming a routeen. Going anywhere in the car that you swapped the bike for is now a pain because if your not stuck in a traffic jam, or trying to find somewhere to park, you're being pursecuted by sneeky fricking camera vans. You've got a longterm girlfreind / wife, and you love her, but you'd just like to spend a little time with your mates, without her now and again, be your own man for a few hours a weekend. Your getting fat, and gyms are really frickin boring. Mountain biking on the other hand sounds a little more fun. You've got a bit more money now, and you could buy a bike with suspension you always dreamed off as a skint 15yr old, AND you have a car to get somewhere new different and cool to ride. Dosent take long to get hooked, weight starts falling off, and your having fun. :D

You soon lern that falling off hurts a shed load more now than when you were a teenager. You just dont seem to bounce as well as you used to, but you never forget how to fall off which is good. Still you seriously think about pads, and a helmet that you would have NEVER worn as a kid suddenly seems an absolute essential. Picking scabs is still as good as it ever was lol, only now your a lot more hairy and plaster removal is even worse than all them years ago.

Yep couldn't agree more that's exactly where I am in life the bike rides are a welcome break from the misssus and a chance for me to be one of the lads again  (keep that quiet though officially it is just a cost effective way of me losing weight  ) I can also afford all the gucci kit for my bike now like xtr etc and with the tax thing eventually afford an amazing full suss fairly cheaply.
  • Get a local OS map... I love XC riding ..... Bridleways and footpaths are gr8 .... Live right near the green belt (london side) and great off roading right outside my doorstep.... Cant wait to get back on my bike once the rain stops :D

once the rain stops? thats the best time it's soft and muddy so when you fall off it doesn't hurt. Yeah I am thinking of going down to swinley forest for the first time the week after next as I have heard it's good over there.

Brilliant set of posts and I whole heartedly agree with Grimy. I am 37 and all of the things you mention apply here - I had a great ride today and thought I have not handled a bike this well since I smashed me Raleigh Night burner up back in what 1986-87 ?

Grimy's post should be put in a sticky at the top of the forum. +1 for me, except I'm a bit older and I never have ever owned a car.

Brilliant especially the scab bit...my wife gave me a b0llock1ng for doing that in the front room saying that it would scar...I tried to explain that my crank teeth shark bite injury looked fantastically cool and I didn't want them to ever go :(
