I live in Ireland and my company are about to join the cycle to work with Raleigh. Now I can go to any of their 18 associated stores an buy a different bike if I wish. This is a good thing. but you guys in England have it good.

This is my first road bike but I thought I would do it properly so I thought Planet x or Dolan Mythos. Both 999 so hopefully with the exchange rate I would pay a little more but still be able to get a Carbon fibre bike.

I cant go to planet X as they have no distribution channel for Ireland and cycle to work is direct with them. I found a shop that stocks Dolan and is a Raliegh Distributor so I thought quids in. however I asked about the 999 quid with the 105 group set and they cant source it through their channels it is UK only. They are only allowed to sell Framesets. So the complete bike will cost in excess of 1500 euros to get the same bike that is offered in the UK for 999quid. 1100 euros.

Sorry rant over but it is so frustrating living here in Ireland.

Hey there del420t, can you not do some sort of deal with your work and get them to pay in stirling and you pay them back in stirling, that way you could pop up here to the North and get what you want?

Not sure if it's allowed, but can you not get the supplier to invoice your work directly, even from the North, in stirling and just pay back the Euro equivalent?

Can't you order it from a uk supplier and get it delivered to a uk address ?

Alternativley you could get a 0% credit card for 10 months - then you could choose any bike you like - and be able to haggle over the price

Madigans in Carrick do full planet x price at the website prices and the guy that runs knows his stuff so if you are able to use Northern shops then well worth giving him a call.

Not everyone in the UK can get £999 carbon bikes because how the schemes are run, a bit like yours by the sound of it, are based on how the scheme is implemented in your organisation. I for instance am restricted to 10 LBS in the Belfast area. I got a Scott CR1 Team for £1100 and paid the extra £100 for my bike so I was happy enough and I really like the bike. I wouldn't have considered it had not been my only real option if I wanted full carbon.

As for having things bad you want to go South with sterling at the minute. The price of everything is extortionate. Nearly £5 a pint. Costs me £2.50-£3.00 round by me. Our road races are capped at 60 due to PSNI restrictions (a law which was never enforced before and a bunch of clampets in Stormont with the power to change the law who have about as much interest in cycling as they do in actually doing a days work - they'd rather fight amongst themselves). At least though the PSNI haven't started charging us for policing road races yet unlike England which is I believe is in an even worse state.
