Front Mechs

Hi,
I bought a new front mech for my OCR2. It did have a Sora (3 speed) front and Tiagra (9speed) rear. I just bought a new Tiagra front for a tenner of ebay..I've also got an OCR 4 for bashing around town which is mostly Sora and non-series componenets.
Could i use the old Sora front mech (which was used on a triple chainset) and put it on the OCR4 (which is a double chainset)? Surely it's just the shifters that dictate whether or not you can change these components over as even though the Sora frnt mech can move back and forward in three positions the shifter will only allow it move through two...
