Cycle shoe sizing, what's going on?

I am looking at replacing my cheap uncomfortable BG Spech shoes with something that hasn't got an inbuilt varus wedge. I normally take a 42-43 (8-9) in shoes but seem to take 44 (10+) in cycle shoes – well at least the Sidi, Mavic and PI ones I have tried. I tried size 43 Sidis and could hardly get them on, they felt like 7s! It is the length that is the main problem. Is this normal? Should cycle shoes be too small?

  • Don't forget to allow for thicker, possibly waterproof socks that you may need to wear in the winter months. The shoes I bought two years ago fit fine in the thin summer socks, but the fit is very tight with thin socks and my ultra thin seal skins, to the extent that my toes cannot wait to escape out of the shoes after a 25 minute blast to/from work!

As for needing the next euro size up compared to walking shoes, I guess it is down to the pointy shape at the toes end, helping us go 0.0004 mph quicker ;)

Shimano are well known for making tight shoes and normally you need to go up a size.

Sidi are Italian and Maybe Italian feet come up smaller ?

If width is a problem - you can sometimes get wider sizes - they call them Mega.

couple of points wrt to sizing...most of the American Shoes tend to fit fine but as a pointer..i'm a 10 which is actually closer to a Euro 45 than 44...but my Shimanos are a 46..having moved back to SiDi after 20 yrs...best decision ever.....I had my feet measured and fitted at Cycle Fit in London and ended up with the 48s...like most things made for Italians they both the shoes and italians..come up really small..
  • my left foot is 8.5 but my right is a size 9 - so I get size nine shoes - does this mean I have to go for size ten? That's enormous for my size feet!

Has anyone here compared spesh shoe sizing against sidi? I have size 45 spesh mtb shoes and I was going to take a punt on an internet order for Sidi, but I'm having some doubts. If anyone has compared the two brands I'd appreciate your comment.

  • If Sidi and Shamano are causing problems then don't use them and go for Nike, Gap or some other Sports Shoemaker! Your looking for shoes that are shmoltzi (good) to wear not Shlutter (rubbish). Damn. You guys pay enough for shoes like me, so get the ones that don't confuse you and wear comfortable-sized shoes that don't hurt your feet. I use Nike shoes made for cyclists. You might have to search around, but they fit like good shoes should! ;)

    Cheers!
