Help I need a new rear light, no room on seatpost!

Can anyone recommend a good cheap rear light that doesn't fit to the seatpost?
I've just bought a mahoosive seat bag that obscures the whole post so my old one is a no go.

The web doesn't specify how they fit usually and the only one that I know would fit is the £25 cateye one which is a bit steep ATM.

I had to get the train in this morning because it was a bit foggy

What bag is it? Many (most these days?) have a tab to take a rear light (my Smart Superflash has a simple hook that fits in). Some jackets also have a light tab. Also, on the bike I have that has a rear rack I have fitted an accessory Smart bracket (£3) and it can slot in there.

Failing that, many lights (well, my Smart does) have a choice of bracket fittings including one small enough to fit a seat stay - I would fit it on the right hand side so it is more visible to traffic, however in my view this position is far from ideal, being quite low down, and also more prone to knocks.

Yeah it does have a tab, but it's not fully waterproof so when you put the included cover on it covers the tab, its a vaude bag you'd have thought the Germans would have figured this out.

I agree with you about visibilty, I want cheap ones so I can get one for each side, also they'll look like afterburners in the fog 8)

Is there not a little sort of strap at the back of the saddlebag that you can clip the light to?

If the light you have at the moment is a cat-eye with the square fitting, then you can get this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Cateye_C1_Belt_Clip/5300003264/ cateye-c-1-belt-clip-for-led-lights.jpg and slide it onto the light then clip to the strap on the saddlebag.

I have one attached to the camelback.

This is a really good light that will fit a seat stay.

The Smart b-spoke (£11.99 from CRC) has seat stay and seat post brackets included. I've even managed to use the seat stay bracket and the supplied rubber shims to fit one to my pannier rack!

    Oh, and it's RVLR compliant...

I bought one of those for my £25 Cateye rear light (LD610?) so I could fit it to the tab on the back of my new saddlebag. Within a couple of days, the light and clip had bounced off the bike and were gone forever. It really is a shite belt clip - there are no ridges at the bottom (if you know what I mean) to keep it in place. I bought a Smart Superflash as a replacement (half the price of the Cateye) which has a built in clip with a ridge at the bottom and seems a lot more secure.

I cable tied the Cateye belt clip on to an old saddle bag, that sorted the bouncing off problem

Hmm not had any issues with it on my camelback so far. The clip is nice and tight and has a little bump sticking out between the clippy surfaces. Although tbh the bit on the bag it's clipped too is quite a thick rubberised bit of fabric as well so this no doubt helps too.

    @kyoukoku

There's quite a bit of difference in damping between a rucksack and a frame mounted saddlebag type thing.

A light that is rock solid on a rucksack could be shaken off in moments on anything frame mounted like Prawny has.

I had a cateye with that very clip bounce off my pannier rack-pack too. Luckily I heard it go!

The clip thing is a no go because of the waterproof cover, also if it did bounce off there's no way I'd here it because of the blood thundering in my ears :?

I had a look at the smart 7 LED one some places say it comes with a seatstay mount but I don't know the companies, anyone got one of these?

pva glue on the clip and or a zip tie stops it leaving wherever you clip it onto. I have various lights glued/tied onto various bags cos it's easier that way

    +1

I've got one of these, and while mine is on my seat post, it should fit on the seat stay, and unlike a lot of light you can adjust the angle of dangle to point it upwards a bit :)

I'm converting to Knog, there stuff, including lights that attach to almost everything are brilliant.

  • helmet mount ones are good. i use one also i use my front light helmet mounted. why, coz i'm too lazy to keep taking stuff off the bike every time i lock it up.

  • +1 on the tip for zip ties for lights attached by belt clips. Seat bags do bounce around a bit (more so than rucksacks on your back) so, with hindsight, I can see how easy it is for them to fall off. Just wish I'd figured that out BEFORE my light went bouncing down the street (unheard by me).

Also, +1 for the Knogs. I've got a 4 LED one wrapped around my head tube. Secure, bright and easy to attach/remove as necessary plus no unattractive brackets left on your bike when you don't need lights.

I've also got the Knog Frog wrapped around my rear hub. I did try to fit it to my (Fratello) seat stays but the seat stays were too thin. Might just be that they are thinner than most.
