Innertubes + wheels

I've been using a mountain bike (pretty cheap and standard bike) to get to work on and it occured to me that it would be much more easy and enjoyable to ride if I changed the wheels to more road appropriate tires.

Can I just chance the tires and tubes for this or will I need to change the whole wheel.

I'd rather do the former, obviously.

With that in mind, some links to some cheap sites would be helpful.

P.S Hi.

Just the tyres and maybe the tubes if you buy tyres of a simialr width to what you had in the form of knobblies.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    HI and welcome.

Changing the tyres to something like a slick would make quite a big difference compared to the knobbly tyres your probably running noy.
You may have to change the inner tubes to a slightly narrower one to match your tyres. That said if your careful you may get away with the ones already in.
If you have disc brakes front and rear it is possible to fit road bike wheels with disc mounts. This would make an even bigger improvement but would cost more.

Ok, thanks for the quick replies. There is a shop near mine that has very cheap and reasonable prices.

Perhaps there are tires which are a litle less suseptible to puncture too as the cycle paths I frequently ride or charva-home and as such have smashed lambrini bottles on them.

try fitting some protection strips inside the tyres.
Some tyres do offer more protection than others but you pay for it, with protection strips you move them from tyre to tyre.

Puncture avoiding tyres include Scwalbe Marathon or Marathon Plus but they ain't cheap but do avoid booking appointments from the puncture fairy. I've not had a flat since fitting mine over 12 months ago.
