Tyre fitting problems

I'm having a bit of a nightmare fitting road tyres to my XT-M770 wheels. I broke my old rear wheel, 16 spoke M-540 if anyone has one to sell - can't find 'em anywhere. I bought the XT's about a year ago, it was the nearest thing I could find to the old ones, and still haven't ridden them!!!!
I had Conti Sport contact 1.3 which fitted on my old wheels, but no chance on the new ones. I then got some 1.5 Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick tyres as the tech specs said minimum 1.5, but still just as difficult. There's so much of the tyre still hanging over the rim, I try and pull it back with tyre levers but it's so tight I don't think it'll ever go.
I wasn't aware of how significant the tubeless aspect of the wheel might be, but I saw one post that suggested some tyres might not fit?
I'd prefer not to get rid of the wheels, but I need to be able to fit road tyres. If it's a dead end, I may sell them, they've gone up by over £100 since I got them! Does anyone know of any low spoke, light weight wheels that would be suitable? I'm just gutted I can't get the old one's anymore.
Thanks
Richard
