Reading elsewhere on this site about the value of carrying a multi-tool, set me thinking,(ouch it hurts) I carry a multi-tool and tubes, tyre levers, chain splitter in order to look after my bike if it has a mechanical. But I don't carry any first aid for myself at all, not even a small anti-septic wipe.

I wondered if anyone carried any kind of first aid on their training rides.

I have carried a first aid kit with me for the last 5 years but haven't need to use so much as a plaster out of it (and saying that means I'll fall off on Thursday and tear my arm off). Like everything else in my Camelbak that people think is unnecessary, I would rather have it with me and never use it than need it one day and it not be there.

If you do decide to start carrying one, please be aware that some of the contents will have an expiry date on them and whether you've used them or not, they need throwing out at some point.

In reply to Willhub, that's partly my point, neither do I plan on falling off, but I also keep my bikes very well maintained so the chance of a mechanical is greatly reduced but I still carry bike first aid and no F.T.T. first aid. :D

Depends where you go dont it, if you are going through some rough parts you may need a puncture repair kit for yourself.

I don't carry any first aid and I fall off all the while.

If I can cycle home, it can wait until I get home, if I can't cycle home I probably need an ambulance. Extra clothes would be more use in the event of a relatively serious accident to keep warm.

The usual first aid kit contents are no use for anything major, and anything minor can wait. Stuff that would help for major"events" would be things like airways, large ambulance dressings, triangular bandages and a space blanket.

and chicks will notice and stop and see if your ok ;)

Really? When someone leaned out of a car window and pushed me off, cracking my pelvis, the next car to drive past was a group of girls laughing at me.

First aid wasn't much use there though.

    :?

Ok maybe not, Just trying to say that for minor injuries its really not worth the hassle.

But cracking your pelvis, first aid is not gonna help especially if your on your own

Yeah. Not sure any equipment is much use there! Other than a mobile... Which luckily didn't break on impact!

I carry a pack of plasters and some antiseptic gel in the pannier. I have a more complete first aid kit in my desk and at home with some larger dressings, scissors, bandages and tweezers. (nb I note that the 'sterile before" date on the dressing is Oct 2009.)

However, I haven't had the plasters with me on either occasion in the last two years I've fallen off........

I think its always good to carry a plaster/an antiseptic wipe aswell as some tissues. They don't excactly weigh like a brick and its better than getting your best jersey bloody if you are bleeding!
  • you know, taking first aid never even crossed my mind. it's certainly worth taking it though upon reflection, i could fit it in easily, and i can think of loads of times when an anti septic wipe or a plaster would of come in really handy!

I don't carry anything except my lips and hands ready to give mouth to mouth or CPR to any obliging drop dead gorgeous cycling babe should it be needed.
    A mobile is always useful.

I have a full first aid kit in my Camelbak for when I go out on my mtb.You never know when you will fall off when off road plus I tend to fall off everyride.
I don't carry anything on the road bike as I don't feel it warrants it.I nearly always ride alone and ride safely and well within my limits.I know at some point I may hit some loose gravel etc but I'll deal with it when the time comes.
I used to ride motorbikes a few years ago and I always got used to thinking ahead and about every danger that may be lurking and I've carried this over to cycling too.I'm not saying you guys are bad cyclists so don't get me wrong, moments will always happen that cause an off but some could probably be avoided.
