Hi,

I am about to sell my Aluminium Ribble training bike and was thinking of just buying another new one from ribble but now I am thinking I would really like to try a steel frame training bike. I can't seem to find any new pre-built ones around for sale.. I would just like one with fairly basic components ideally campag and a decent frame which would be a bit more forgiving than the aluminium. Not bothered about weight and my budget could stretch to £800 at a push.

Can anyone recommend any?

Thanks,
Tim

You could try a Planet-X Kaffenback, but you'll have to build it up yourself if you want Campagnolo parts. I had one and it was a blast - a great, all round bike. Rather than buying new, you could also try picking up a used frame from classifieds or ebay.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I have a Moser Forma circa '92 which I bought from these guys http://www.retrodicorsa.cc/Retro_di_Corsa/Intro.html last year. The frame was perfect & had hardly ever been ridden. I built mine up with Shimano 105 groupo & Ksyrium Elite wheels (had the wheels from another bike) Frame cost £290 that would leave you with plenty for a nice Campag build. Bike rides great with short wheelbase so it is very responsive and not too heavy. The Moser gets more comments than my Scott Addict R2 when I'm out on it!

Cheap - On-One Kaffenback or Pompino. Bit dearer, something from P.Hewitt.Top end, Roberts,Serotta CDA or a White Vanilla or a Richard Sachs (5 year wait for these) or a Pegoretti

On the pretty rare ocassions I visit the Evans website I do find myself searching for this, and, other than thinking why the f**k have they put a black chainset on a retro style bike with a polished stem, I rather like it.

I keep checking out the Condor Classico too. That Pegoretti in last weeks CW looked fabulous as well.

Not exactly helpful to your budget mind.

The Jamis Quest is available over here at about £700, which is great value for a Reynolds 631 / Shimano 105 equipped bike.
Byercycles also do a 631 based bike foe about £800
  • would recommend that you keep your eyes peeled to ebay - something will come up over the next few weeks - for example there was a Condor Fratello sold there recently, which would be ideal for you. You could buy one new from Condor through the cycle to work scheme... otherwise 2nd hand much cheaper. My training bikes (which I put most of my miles in on) are steel, and really like the ride.

A friend of mine picked up a 653 Ellis Briggs Campag equipped bike for £50 on Ebay on Monday. Bargains like that do come up quite often so keep your eyes peeled.

a mate is currently having a lightweight steel frame built up by Paul Hewitt. Columbus tubing I think.

  • try brian rourke in stoke, he has off the peg frames or built to order stuff to suit your needs and pocket.
  • Do Colnago still make a steel/alu frame? I'm looking at a new training bike too.

Thanks alot for the help, plenty for me to check out there. I will keep an eye on ebay, and have emailed B Rourke on a possible build. I will def want mudguards which sidelines a couple of the nicer looking italian frames...

Condor Fratello? The Gios MegaLite is also available with mudguards in the UK. Otherwise, some of the UK frame builders would leave you enough cash to spare from your 700 pounds for the build kit.

My LBS had a beautiful red X Lite in the January sale, 55cms, reduced to £600. Even though I know Colnagos do not fit me (short legs long torso so I need a longer top tube) I still kick myslef for not buying it, and maybe just hanging it on the wall.... :(
