Just so you folks in the rest of the English speaking world need some clarification, "outwith" is Scots for "outside of".

I would have thought that some part of the council would be in charge of implementing this sort of thing, to meet Eurocratic regulations. I keep meaning to email whoever is responsible for meeting said requirements by installing bike lanes without any parking restrictions, all over Edinburgh. Would be fun to know if the city got any grants from Westminster and/or Brussels for bike lanes that no one can ever use, and if this was fraudulent in any way.

    Cyclists dismount, as they say.

I saw this linked too elsewhere....

    http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc ... 076694.pdf

Page 80 (print) / 88 (pdf) is the cycling bit, which all looks rosy and utopian with it's "avoid the need for cyclists to dismount" and not conceding priority to side road traffic and "Cyclists should be catered for on the road if at all practicable", and since it's written by the Scottish Government, should be a nice big stick to beat the council with.

  • It's Mainly for South Lanarkshire but I think Glasgow should be involved too. The main bit I am taliking about is the River Clyde cycles lanes (Glasgow to Edinburgh). Instead of going along the Clyde the whole way the route basically stops at Westburn in Cambuslang and makes you go through a country road, which folk basically use as a motorway short cut. I've never had any bother with motorists here but the fact is you're taking a massive detour and losing a hell of a lot of scenery in the process.

I know for the 2014 games the cooncil are doing up Dalmarnock Clyde area (the travelling folk are being moved to Cambuslang/Flemington) under regeneration so I'm hopefull they could continue the whole way along to Hamilton.

I'm getting a list of MP's, MSP's, cooncilors, MEPS and bike groups and I'll be firing it off soon. Ill post it on here if yous like. Ill also use the Scottish Government pdf to annoy my cooncil, given it's Labour dominated they won't be too open to reading an SNP document!

    Cheers guys

    I don't rate your chances.

There is a well ued Glas/Edin cycle route along the Forth/Clyde canal and you can already get a long way into and out of Glasgow along various traffic free routes along various rivers (Kelvin, Clyde are the ones I know of).

If you are lucky, they will change the colour of the road surface and put up a symbol of a bicycle somewhere. One of the most dangrous roads in the Lothians, leading to Heriot Watt Uni got this treatment. Only took 4 fatalities before they took such decisive and effective action.

Now, if you were to complain that all the bus lanes in glasgow last about 50 yards, end for 20 and then start again, with no provision for cycles between, such that cyclists are constantly cut up by motorists trying to jump the queues at 40mph before stamping on the brakes, then go for it.
  • The one possible chance I may have is the fact that Sustrans have given the go ahead to link up the two parks in Hamilton with cycle friendly routes. There is a really good track from Uddingston train station to Bothwell, if Westburn-Uddingston and Bothwell-Hamilton could be linked up (about 2-3 miles in total) along the Clyde then you will have a 95% traffic free route from Hamilton all the way to Glasgow City Centre.

As suggested the chances are slim, but I shall give it a bash.
