how not to bleed elixirs

Wanted to chop down my brake lines so bought an avid bleed kit and set to it... how hard can it be...

cut them down in 5 mins, it's a doddle, just to bleed now.

take pads out of caliper to prevent contamination - insert packer to stop pistons moving - very loose, but oh well it will be fine.

get the syringes on and start the bleeding process - all going well so far, following instructions... seems a bit long winded but never mind.

get to the bit where you pump the lever 10 times. Fail to notice pad spacer has dropped out. pump lever, and here a woosh as the piston comes all the way out and launches across the garage floor :( - brake fluid everywhere. panic and hose off fluid from bike, lose bleed port grub screw in the process.

spend 40 mins looking for sed screw and eventually find it - forget hose is still on and disconnect at the tap soaking myself and the garage.

decide enough's enough and have dinner.

come back and do the rear brake correctly in 10 mins flat.

re - bled the front 3 times but still some air in there so will have another go tonight :)

glad I did this after I'd been for a good ride :)

Hmm, sounds similar to when I did my brakes recently. In my shed, pads out but no spacers as I just push the pistons back, pushing fluid through. Turn my back for 10 seconds to grab spanner for bleed nipple when my curious 3 year old son comes in and repeatedly pulls the lever. Fluid everywhere.....little $*@^!! :x
