Best Time of year to buy?

I've been reading the forums the past week having decided that it might be worth getting back into biking after a 10 year break since my youth. All the suggestions people have made for the price range I am considering have given me a good indication of what to look for but I can't help feeling that I have missed the boat with the bargains - particularly on 08 models.

So when is the best time of year to purchase a bike and snap a bargain or does this change year to year depending on how "on the ball" the manufacturers are?

yup, you've missed most of the '08 bargains, unless you're a dwarf or the jolly green giant ;)

manufacturers release their new ranges at different times to each other though, so you may get a bargain if you shop about a bit.

pauls cycles have a lot of discounted bikes, worth a look if you know what you want/need in a bike.

  • Today is always a good day to buy a bike!
I've bought the old model just when the new one comes out a couple of times. But regarding bike sales, IMO this year could be a bit hard to predict what with this creditcrunch thing? Pound notes with something thats been in stock for a while, but that may not be the "hot model"?..

I wouldn't say that you've missed the boat, have a look at paulscycles as I got a medium 08 model last week and pretty much all all the other bikes I was looking at had a pretty full range of sizes. Though places like Evans and CRC are at the extreme size now if you look you can find, it just depends what you are after.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?
  • Evans still have an '08 tharpu peak 3.0 in Medium. Going for about a grand, down from £1,600 (or so they say).
Comes highly recommended though. XT drive, easton finishing kit, Good Fox shock and forks.
    Picture in my sig.

(no, I do not work for Evans, although I wish I did :P )

As you would expect on this board, along with everyone else my limit is £350

That's why I was seeing whether I pick up a £500rrp ish bike down to my level. Wishful thinking I guess!

Yeah I have noticed that Paul's Cycles do very good deals but its a 3hr drive from me so the money I'd be saving would be spent in petrol lol and he requires 48hrs to get a bike ready for a demo that is on sale online. I suppose I could be cheeky and try it in a different shop and buy online later from him. I would definetly need a test ride after being out of the loop though.

The only chains in the West Midlands near Solihull of note are Leisure Lakes in Wolverhampton and Evans in Birmingham. Any other recommendatons?

pound might get worse might get better, who knows? as already said i think right now is the best time not cos of the money but it's spring so you'll have lots of good weather rides which might not discourage you from riding like buying a bike in windy, cold and raining winter. get the best you can and as soon as possible i reckon :)

disclamer, will not be held responsable if the pound dramatically increases in value later in the year heh :P

Erm where's your problem, that's what I did  Well I just sized up the right frame as getting a really good setup takes (me) ages

Or try the bike that you want in a local shop and ask them to price match?
If you are on a budget I`d seriously reccomend you look in Halfords at the Carrera bikes, particularly the Kraken or Fury.
If you are near a Decathlon store also have a look at the Rockrider bikes.

I'd also recommend Halfords, the guys in the Solihull branch are pretty good. Seem to know their stuff and most of them sounded like mountain bikers themselves.
I had a problem with my brakes, dropped the bike in on a Tuesday evening, and by Wednesday afternoon they'd checked them, bled them, couldn't solve it, so had the bike sent back to head office (Redditch I think) for investigation, they could'nt figure it out, so they just put on a new set of brakes, and had it back and ready to go at the time we'd agreed.

Plus the Carrerra bikes are great value, you won't get a proper test ride, but go during the week when its quieter and you shud be able to pootle round the shop floor. Not ideal, but at least you'll get a good idea of sizing.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I may go down to Halfords tonight as I live just behind the retail park. Part of me still has a bit of Carrera snobbery from 10 years ago but I guess things can change over that amount of time.

It looks like there is a Decathlon store in Dudley so that maybe an option too.

Also there is a guy in my office who is selling his Kona Kula 07 on ebay and he may want to do a deal with me (just in my price range and looks ok from the photos too) so that may be an option.

Don't go bidding on it lol - I may have first dibs!

the kona looks in good nic, but i don't think the warrarntys are transferable? might be another manufacterer though? another "but" is you won't get i presume some free future servicing thrown in buy buying new from a lbs/halfords. if you're willing to learn how to service parts (easy really and you get to slowly build up a nice tool collection) then the kona looks good to me, unless it's the wrong size for you then don't go near it.

Well he has sold the Kona for £400 so at least I'm not going to be rushed into a decision on 2nd hand bike.

I'm beginning to narrow my spec list

Preferably forks with Lockout (everyone seems to suggest this is good) so this negates RS Dart 1's - perhaps Dart2's/3's/ Tora 302's if possible?

Avoiding Suntour forks as they get poor reviews in the latest MBUK bike test.

Mechanical vs Hydraulic Brakes still to be determined.

I guess I am narrowing my choices all the time if I am this fussy!
