Personal preferance on the first one.

If you look at the top of the xt shifter there should be two screws that allow you to take the housing off.

do you not need a cap or something to cover the hole ? what left exposed?

I covered mine with some bits of carbon fibre I had lying around, I used a small amount of silicone sealant to seal them. Plastic would do the same job, just doesn't look as trick.

lock, if you take off the indicators, on the reverse is a round black disc held in by 2 black clips, take out the disc and that covers the hole.

XT shifters (at least the latest ones) actually have two mountaining positions to let you run them outboard of your brake (or inboard, can't remember which). In one of the positions you have to take the indicators off.

As to where I run them, mixture depending on the bike and which shifter :? . Maybe one day I'll decide which I prefer.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
