not sure if i ve posted this in correct area but....

bought a pair of ultremo R's on recommendation from LBS ( i usually go with Michellin pro race 2/3 ) was given the chat about puncture resistant , great tyre , blah blah ...

less than 200 miles in ( not enough time to wear of the moulding thread around tyre centre ! ) and the side wall has developed a split .

no other punctures , bashed or pot holes hit and i run the tyres at 110-115 ( they are good for up to 140 ! ) and im not a heavy rider ..

has any body else had a similar issue before i start ranting at LBS and looking to return both tyres out of annoyance or frustration ..or is it just one of those things?

...ive never had this prob with the Mich's should have stuck to what i knew best !

currently hunting around the house on a sunny easter sunday to find spare tyres ! not happy  :(

It happens - usually a flint or shard of glass and would do the same to any tyre - it's the risk of riding fancy-dan racing rubber in all conditions.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    oo harsh

normally id agree re: the fancy dan and all conditions , but ... this is one of the bikes that has not been dragged through the muck and rain ( i use my hacks for that over winter /spring . 98% of the british summer ) just annoyed that 4 rides out and im slinging 35 quid away ..hoped for more from a tyre that would labelled ..ahem ...puncture proof ( we all know that never the case ...but rather hoped i would not be averaging nearly a tenner a ride on a tyre ! )

back to the winter tractor tyres till the shops open again !

    Bad luck, but crap happens.

As Monty says, if your tyre rolls over something sharp enough then it will go through.

    HI
If its high enough on the side wall not have been anywhere near the road, then i'd take them back...
But at the same time, be sure its not near the bead, if it is, then check your rim.

Like everyone says...punctures happen, but then products do fail from time to time, and if it happens to you, and you have a just case, then most shops will honour the replacement.

Could just be a freak defect. Before you go in the shop with guns drawn just tell them what happened and give them a chance to fix the problem. This could be something they have never come across before themselves.

I've been reading reviews on Ultremos recently as I was keen on getting a pair and the sidewall splitting seems to be a recurring problem. I guess thin sidewalls help keep the weight down. Keeping them at the max psi helps apparently, but I guess that's of no use to you now. :?

    Good luck getting a refund.

Looks like they do/did have a problem !

seems im not so mad after all ..... LBS staff would not believe the split (when i took it in )was possible in the location it was in ...wonder if i can get a refund on the ones i had to purchase as replacements ?

You should be able to, it's now an accepted problem and they have been recalled

I bought two new ones for the bling factor. The rear lasted 15 miles before a massive sidewall blowout.

I had them on my bike , they lasted for about 500 miles and then developed three huge bulges in the sidewall. I,ve since binned them and bought Conti GP4000S. So guess i am out of pocket.

Has anyone used the Ultermo DD, with the extra sidewall protection?

    I'm quite temmpted by them.

I bought some Ultremo R's last week on line and are now fitted to my bike. Should I call the shop and ask for a refund?
  • I have a set of standard Ultremo' s, i find them to be an incredible set of tires and they have taken quite a beating, hitting pot holes and the like at a fair whack.

I have nothing bad to say about the tires, they have improved my performance and look great on the bike.

new set of Ultremo R's on bike have not shown any sign of damage or problems . Managed to drag me around a wild , wet and windy Derbyshire on the Spud Riley and the hundreds of miles in the run up to without failing, splitting or slipping .......second batch have turned out to be the tyres I thought I was buying in the first place !

still no refund though ....more a " oh.....really ...."

I take it this problem was only with the R's? Not with the standard Ultremo's? Because I did hear someone saying at the club recently that Schwalbe is a bit "hit and miss" but my standard Ultremo's have been flawless after 1000 miles.
  • I just found that one of my 2x Ultremos (not Rs, normal type) have the Bulge after 1800 miles. I contacted Schwalbe UK and they're sending 2x replacements tomorrow.

Mine lasted 6 weeks and about 1200 miles before the sidewall went bang. Descending Hautacam.

And the one before that did the bulge thing after about twice as much use. Noticed it in the car park at the end of the Fred Whitton, thanked lucky stars

Ouch. I was decending as well. About 35 mph. Could have been sooooo much worse. Hope you were ok!

Luckily was braking for a corner at the time, at a similar speed to yourself, and not turning into one. Was the back too so I stayed upright.
