Hi everyone

Hope you can help me.

I am an Ultramarathon runner and regulary compete in 12 and 24 hour events. Due to injuries I've been advised to switch to cycling. The last thing I want to do is waste my conditioning so am looking for similar duration events.

I'm a newbie to the whole bike thing, so am looking for advice on the sort of bike I should be looking for. Budget will be around the GBP2000 mark, but won't be offended if anyone suggests a higher or lower price / spec.

Thanks

Richard

  • Get yourself a tiitanium bike. Make sure you get the right size, get a decent groupset Ultagra, Dura Ace or equivelant, compact chainset for tired legs and a comfy saddle (Brooks).

Enigma, Van Nicholas, Sabbath etc do nice Ti bikes.

Running legs are a lot different to cycling legs so allow some time to build up cycling strength in your legs.
  • not really any poor bikes out there for 2k - get what you fall in love with, and it will be great. try something from the more 'bespoke' outfits (as previous thread) and it'll feel alot more special than the dime a dozen mass market brands... In addition to great suggestions previously, have a look at mosquito bikes website - pretty much anything there would be great... or Condor Cycles

So the first question is why a titanium bike?

Second is which one to buy for the task at hand?
  • because it is beautiful, light, and very comfortable (partic for long rides) as the material is 'giving'. start with mosquito, van nicholas or enigma's web site (or condor - they do a titanium bike) . any built up titanium bike from any of those guys will be great for what you want it for, but ideally i'd go for a sportive frame (slightly more relaxed for long periods in the saddle), and, importantly, given how long you'll be in the saddle - get a fitting (which van n, enigma, mosquito, condor will all do)

Someone in my LBS the other day was complaining about Ribble bikes being favoured by all endurance riders. Apparently they even all have beards and where strange clothing! It would be worth checking out but not sure how you would go about getting fitted for one.
