1. Are they worth it?
2. Is the size same as seat post size?

It will need to be the same diameter as your seat tube, justy check which size front mech you have.

I think so, and most Pro Team mechanics think so.

  • Just be aware that they may not fit your frame. Some carbon frames flare out towards the BB.

    1. Yes. I fitted one a week or two back after dropping my chain 3 times in one ride on steep hills. I had no problems after fitting the Fang.

    2. No. That's the inside diameter of the set tube. You need the outside diameter which will be a few mm bigger. I measured my tube using a big adjustable spanner - I closed the jaws until they just touched the sides of the tube and simply measured across the jaws! 8)

You may want to try adjusting your drivetrain. This is not "normal" behavior.

OP - I don't have a dogfang on my bike mainly because I can't get one to fit my frame.

On the size thing, a general rule is:

    27.2mm seatpost, and you'll need a 32mm dog fang/seatclamp/front mech

    31.6mm seatpost, and you'll need a 35mm dog fang/etc

Not foolproof, but generally runs true...

    Thanks for the advice guys

Where will it tell me on front derailer the size(hopefully without removing)

Anyone any ideas what size for a pinarello FP5 would be as not gonna be able to measure that bike.

The front derailleur is adjusted correctly. If I take the endstop in any more I can't get the chain down off the middle ring.

No, it's not normal behaviour on most of my rides either!

The problem was that I was riding in an unfamiliar area so I didn't know when some of those steep hills were waiting round the corner. Where I ride normally, I know all the roads and give myself plenty of time to change chainrings. On the ride in question, it was - 25 mph into a bend on the big or ring middle ring, then - oops, straight into a 20% climb. In the mad panic to get onto the inner chainring before grinding to a halt, I threw the chain right over the top of it.

At first, I wasn't sure that the Dog Fang was doing much on the test ride. I did the most violent front changes possible to see what happened and the shifts were perfect every time.

When I inspected the Fang after the ride, I could see oily debris from the chain on the tip of it so the chain had definitely overshifted and then dropped back into place (the Fang is positioned such that the chain does not touch it when in the small ring / big sprocket combination which is the innermost position the chain should get to).

For people who can't fit a Dog Fang, this might help. If you don't want to buy the article, the photograph should give you a pretty good hint of what to do!

I've had Dog Fangs on both my bikes for the past two years and not dropped a chain since. No matter how perfectly you have the front mech set up if you hit a bump mid-change there is always a chance of bouncing the chain over the inner ring. That's why pro team mechanics fit them.

Do these work ok with compact chainset? Don't see why they wouldn't but just read a comment on a review saying that they don't work with 34/36 tooth inner chainrings?

I've got a triple on my Basso which has a 30 tooth inner ring and the Dog Fang works really well with that.

I did find that the one on my MTB doesn't work quite so well but that bike has a 22 tooth inner ring. It stops the chain getting wedged behind the inner ring but sometimes it gets marooned on the Fang and I have to nudge it back over with the front derailleur.

Anyone seen where to get the type that bolt to the front mech ? (look like a metal prong), as my frame flares out towards the BB and the Dog-fang won`t fit anywhere near.

K-Edge Chain Catcher. Might be able to get them cheaper elsewhere.

I'm thinking of getting one. My Allez came with a Deda Fang as did my first Izoard frame. They've changed the seat tube diamater though and my replacement frame can't take one.

    Thanks men, mucho aprecciato :)

edit.. had a bit of a trawl, looks like that K-Edge catcher only works with braze-on front mechs, my Roubaix has band-on mech, then the frame tube flares out below that to the BB so standard Dogfang won`t work. Seen a pic. on one of the reveiws of a Dogfang cut to suit and held with a good zip-tie, so may go down that route first.

Cheers for the link mate, I had seen those so have been out with the calipers and had a weigh up of the job. I had a braze-on adapter bracket that came with the frame (didn`t use it as I had already bought a clamp-on 6700 front mech), so had a try with the adapter to check for clearances etc. There`s no room below the clamp-on mech band to get anything on there comfortably, due to the bottle boss being right there, and then the frame tube flares out from below that to the BB.

I have now manufactured a simple alloy device (looks like a K-Edge finger) that uses the bottom bottle-boss as a location (bottle cage and bolt clamp it in place nicely, hardly noticeable) and it then kinks out to act as the chain catcher, just fitted it now and it works a treat :)
