Start off with a look in the 'what hardtail' stickie in the buying advice forum and a trip to your local shops. It's unwise to buy anything without at least sitting on it first. It all very much depends on your budget, but you're probably looking at a hardtail for your first bike.
  • welcome to the forums... the more info you can provide will help people help you make your choices :)

ie... Budget, type of riding, approx height + weight might help etc etc.

By preston your pretty central to quite a lot of trails, but you have to travel unfortunately :(

£200 isn't much, at all, but it'll still get you a ride - would look at this saracen:

also look at the decathalon rockrider 5.2:

  • Aye, tis said that £300 is probably the lest you should look to spend to ensure that you do get something fairly capable and with a respectable spec list.

That saracen does look fine for that money tho, good find Whytepeak :)

What size frame are you thinking of buying, as there are some deals on pauls cycles - but you have to be the right size:

I would say around 16" to 17" frame.

I am 6.2, 34" inside leg, and have a 20.5 frame, but a 19" would have also fit well.

Best bet is to go into the shop and have a look yourself, they should also know better regarding height/frame size.

mccmarc: I posted a link to Commencal Normal (£250) in Merlin Cycles (not far from where you live) in another thread, they have the bike there to look at.

I'd second the recommendation to get yourself down to Merlin Cycles, they'll help you out.
