Getting more confused

Went to look at a Genesis Core 30 yesterday - looked good but they didn't have what I think will be the right size to test, so have to wait until next week for them to get one in
In the meantime I asked about the Gary Fisher Hookooekoo, which they are a dealer for but don't have a bike to test. They said that the geometry is very different to that of the Genesis. I won't be doing anything extreme - just riding Cannock Chase, Follow the Dog, that sort of stuff, plus maybe get an extra set of wheels/tyres and use for the commute rather than one of my road bikes.
I appreciate that test rides are the way to go, but this will no doubt be limited to a blast around the roads near the shop rather than the riding it's intended for. What sort of geometry should I be looking for, given the riding I'll be doing? Shorter, more upright, or more stretched out?

Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

For some people it's personal preference, but a more stretched out position tends to indicate a more "racey" stance. If it were me I'd be looking more closely at the head angle.0
