Big Sur, good bike? G2, good thing for beginner?

Hello,

Thinking about getting myself one of the above on the bike to work scheme. Can get quite a good deal I think... £1150 down to £975 for the 09 model detailed here:

I've been for a car park ride which I liked but won't be able to go for a proper test ride.

Is this a good bike to get for a beginner? I've been reading about the G2 geometry and the custom fork offset, pros and cons etc. Is the G2 going to hinder learning new skills at all? What I mean is, would I be better buying a "normal" bike with "normal" geometry to begin with until I find my feet? Or will it not make any difference?

Thanks.

Depends where you plan to ride the bike really. Gentle forest paths and canal side tracks, rougher off road moors and trail cenrtres or the grit and boulders of the peaks?
  • General XC stuff mostly. Occasional trail centre maybe. And then who knows what else. Just looking for a good all rounder I spose.

You are getting a good price, though I think you should try some similar priced models. Boardman Pro?
  • Do you think the G2 stuff is a good idea for a beginner to develop their skills? Or would something a bit more closer to the norm be a better idea?

You get used to whatever bike you ride so I wouldn`t let the G2 geometry worry you.In some ways its meant to be the best of both world`s in giving more agility without compromising stabilty.Thats a good deal too.

I`d try to do a back to back test with the Boardman as suggested, and maybe a Rockhopper,to give you a a point of reference to see what you prefer.

The right bike is the one that fits best and that you feel most comfortable on.

I would deffo go for a proper test ride if you're thinking of getting a Big Sur. The offset fork takes a bit of getting used to if you're comfortable with traditional geometry. Personally I didn't like it, it felt as though the front end was going to tuck.
