I am looking for a new wheelset to replace the ones that have on my 2008 Giant Trance X3 and save some weight. Budget of about £250-300......i have heard good things about the Hope pro 2's with the DT swiss rims, are they worth it? Also i saw a wheelset from "Superstar" Superleggera XC Wheelset. They are quite cheap and claim to be light as well. They were in the magazine: Mountain Biking UK which gave them a good review....BUT i have heard bad things about Superstar soooo.. :? ..?! Any ideas? :?: Thanks for the help

I'm running Hope Hoops with 5.1 rims and have had no trouble so far- many pinch flats as well. Rims are starting to look a bit less new.... :D But I'd stick with the tried and tested... Hope 2's are great hubs, and you can get a variety of rims built onto them by somewhere like Merlin...

I fancy the superstar ones too - unless I win a pot of cash, in which case I'd get the industry nine wheelset :)

this would be my recommendation over the 4.2's.....

the weight difference is about 50grams but they a little wider and a bit stronger. price i believe is about the same.

Hope Hoops with the dt4.2 or 5.1 rim according to whether you need the extra width,to run wider tyres than 2.3.Pro 2 with 4.2s are typically around 1800g,add 50g per rim for the 5.1 so about 1900g.I reckon you`ll save at least 300g with the 4.2s,200g with the 5.1s.
Dont` know anyone who has tried the Superlegerras, but I`d stick with what`s tried and tested,if I were spending that much on wheels.
BTW cheapest deal I can find is:http://www.lexs.co.uk/acatalog/Hope_Pro_2__Pair_.html

Thnx, that a good deal !
do you recommend me keep looking at about 1800g so that i get enough strength in the wheels compared to cheap, light wheels that probably will BREAK! haha...

  • I'd go with the 5.1's more of a do it all rim and takes bigger tyres if needed, unless you're really bothered about weight
  • I bought my pro2 on 4.2's from Stif - you get a 15% discount when spending over £150.

One annoying thing with these wheels is that they dont come with skewers! So I ended up paying about £240 from Stif WITH skewers - worth checking that other deal if they include skewers - I expect not - and hope ones will set you back 20-25 quid I think

  • And, if you get the Hope Hoops, the hubs are only available in black. If you want your own colour, someone will have to handbuild them for you. Again would recommend Merlin

Wow they dont come with skewers!! (semi rip-off)
Yeh i defs would like to have a custom colour....RED!! also i hear that they make quite a loud sound but i love that..........its probably about 30% of the reason why i want to get them haha! Handbuilt is a must cause i want them to be reliable and run true for as long as possible really......thnx

By the way, can you go tubeless with the DT rims???

Most wheelsets do not come with skewers, like most midrange and upwards bikes do not come with pedals. Not a rip off, it's so you can have more choice.

  • Worked out good for me - I could bu coloured skewers rather than standard black.

I suspect it'll be more expensive to get these wheels custom built with coloured hubs, versus the factory built price? Worth checking merlin out though so you can decide if its worth the extra. Personally I wouldn't bother and go with black

You'll only need the one skewer if your running a 15/20mm front axle - saved me a few pennies!

You can buy DT Swiss`s own tubeless conversion kits for these rims.Or you can use Stans or the much cheaper,DIY route with cut down 20" BMX tubes, and sealant.

Before you pull the trigger,I recently read you can now get Hope Hoops built with Stans Notubes ZTR rims.Usefully lighter than the DTs at 360-380 g per im,so you are looking at circa 1750g wheelset, which are every bit as tough and designed to run tubeless.

Even better, you can buy them via Roger Musson of Wheelpro, one of the most respected wheelbuilders, who will check and adjust the wheel tension and set them up for tubeless, all for a reasonable cost of £285.(+£10 delivery)

It's worth noting that you shouldn't use a proII hub with a steel only cassette - it starts to eat into the freehub very quickly and is a bitch to get off.

I didn't realise this when I bought a wheel with proII hub - only went on three rides and there was arleady nasty notches in the freehub. Had to buy a PG980 cassette to use instead which has an alloy carrier.
