Clowbridge Reservoir Nr Burnley
Went up there this weekend for a walk around and there seems to be a few trails disappearing over the horizon but when i looked at the info board nothing was mentioned about cycling.
Does anyone know if its just the one around the reservoir which isnt open to cyclists or is this a no go area completely?

The only bridleway on the map runs past the eastern edge (opposite end to the club house and car park) of the res, it's actually part of the Pennine Bridleway. Other than that it's all footpaths I'm afraid!0

Not so. Most of the trails over Clowbridge/Crown Point/Gambleside are shared use.
If you look at the posts which show the start and end of each section (usually near the gates), they'll be marked with a "pedestrian" symbol only, or a "pedestrian" and "horse" symbol. If its got a horse on it, it's fair game for bikes too.
If you want a guided tour let me know, it's only about 15 minutes from my front door.
Why limit yourself though? Get over the hill into Cliviger and get some real riding in!!0 -
You can run a 4 mile loop around the hill top. To be honest I ride all the paths up there, even the walkers only ones, I'm just extra courteous on these and I've never had a problem. Most are open to cyclists though.
From the resevoir you can go straight up the hill (try and clean it but beware as it gets very steep towards the top), keep going to the stone cross, through the gate up the muddy little chute and then down the rocky chute on the otherside. At the bottom of the rocky section you can go straight on or left through the gate. Straight on takes you to Waterfoot, and eventually Rochdale (and 47 miles later back to where you are now).
For now go left, at the next gate turn right, if you continue down to the road you are doing the Mary Townley Loop in reverse, it'll take you across the road and eventually down towards where Dave lives, or you can take another bridleway that runs along the top of the hills which goes past my house (this is my local evening ride).
Anyway back to the route, turn left through a gate before the road, keep going until you get to another gate, cross the track and climb the style (now you're on a walkers only bit) follow this up to the carpark on Crown Point across the road. Take the path on the opposite side of the carpark (not the one to the singing ringing tree), keep going, cross the road and go up the track (back on shared use now). Through a gate, turn right through another gate, follow the path, very steep and loose at the end, up the other side (again very steep) and soon you'll be freewheeling back to the res.
As Dave said PM one of us for a guided tour, it's our back yard. I'll be up there fairly regularly now the evenings are getting lighter. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
I was only saying what the map shows. But you can't beat a bit of local knowledge!0

my learner zone, simply brilliant, you can spend hours up there then drop across the road and up hameldon to the masts, all are shared access. just stay off the res itself, the walkers get very upset. i live 1/2 mile from there :PCotic Soul rider.0

believe me, i'm no mountain goat, also the good thing about the trails up there is that they range from sedate to a short section of extremely steep.Cotic Soul rider.0

whenever anyone wants showing round just ask, it's only a stones throw from fairy steps on t'other side of t'hill. the trails are rideable in any weather day or night, in fact i prefer it at night.Cotic Soul rider.0

I've only ever ridden on the bridle path that's on the map..... and a few other bits. Best to let one of the local Dingles show us round!0
