A very hardcore 10k (in fact more than 10k) race on Saturday - came 4th out of about 120.

Not too bad!

I'm the yellow dot!

Well in mate, looks fairly gnarly.
First pic looks more like a fell race than a trail.
    What was your time?

Tine was poor - record (on a slightly shorter course - they had to divert around some cows!) is 49 mins - I did 53m53s. Apparently it was quite a bit over 10k. Also the guy who was 3rd was way behind me but accidentally took a short cut and overtook me - Grrrrrr! He was very apologetic though and a top bloke!

My best time on a hilly but obstacle free trail race was a bit over 42 mins.
  • Wow. That hill looked mental!

I'd come DNF in something like that
  • I'd struggle to 4.2 hours let alone 42mins

Nice one, looking good going down the hill  If you enjoy that kind of race I can highly recommend the Exmoor stagger, one of the best and hardest cross country's I have ever done, would love to go back and have another go at It.

Sarnian - will google it. The company that runs this one also does a series of other similar events:

Really well run - I'm also going to do the Devon off road tri in May.

As I used to be into triathlons and have all ways been Into mountain biking a off road tri sounds like something I would love to do, I most get around to doing one.

Let me know when you have done It what It was like, Is It Olympic distance?

Sarnian - they do sprint, Olympic and Endurance distances. It will be my first tri so going for Sprint! (500m open water swim, 10km MTB ride, 5km trail run).

Its all to do with cost and travelling for me, the closer to Pool or Waymouth the better It saves me hundreds as I can go by boat and just ride my bike on and off.
When I used to do triathlons It could work out very expensive when It came to flying with the bike.

I would put a bet on that you will love It and then start getting a little bit addictive to tri's

Sarnian - I know - even more kit to buy!

I run, MTB and swim (and surf) a lot so would be nice to see if I can string all three together. I have a feeling my transitions will be dreadful though!

I would not worry to much about transition for your first tri, It might be a idea to use flats so you don't have to change shoes, so once out the water you just stick your running shoes on for the bike and then the run.

I use flats anyway so not too much of an issue!

    Sounds good to me mate.
I've never done an offroad 10k, looks fun though.
My best time on road is 45 mins, but i prefer fell and XC to road running.

Torres - I actively hate road running! And seem to run better up and down hills too.

Not really saying I ran poorly - it's just slow compared to less arduous off road trail 10Ks!

Best off road is 42 mins so would hope I could dip under 40 minutes on road - I might do one at some stage just to see if I can do it.

Which ones have you done? This was my 4th 10k trail race - first was a couple of years ago. A bit surprised as I never thought of myself as a runner!

Only really been running around a year and a half now, did a local 10k last year in around 45 mins.

Done some local trail races, around 5 miles each, and the 3 peaks [i don't know if you've heard of it] in Sedbergh. About 5 k with around 1000ft of climbing, bit of a beast to go up, but coming down is fun  .

Don't really see myself as a runner either, about 5'7" so not really tall enough, do you race often?

Only my 4th race - all off road.

Don't think height matters - I'm 5'8" and a bit heavy (11.5 stone) for a runner -trail runners seems a bit beefier than road ones though - if I ever resemble a road runner, I'll cry.

    Know what you mean.
What do you do in terms of training Matt? Are you part of a club?

Torres - just train on my own. In a nice area of countryside in Cornwall so plenty of places to run and ride. Do 10 miles a day on the bike and about 2-3 runs (from 5-10km) a week, plus surfing and weights.

    Sounds good.
I'm up in the South Lakes, so loads of trails to go running.
Also a member of a local club, mainly road runners but we venture off the tarmac in summer.

I have been tempted to join a club but it means driving to the meeting place and not taking my dog!

Fair doos then. I only joined this one because it was local, it only started the october before last so only around 10-15 people turn up per session, its nice and managable though, i've heard of others localy who get 30-40 per session. :?

Just found out the official distance was 11.5km/7.2 miles not 10km. That dips my mile times to under 7.5m/mile - much better than 8.6mins/mile - phew!!

Thats good going surf matt, I do a 7 min a mile on the road for a 10k, although my best a couple of years ago was 40.35. Off the bike on a tri I am around 44-45

Sarnian - have managed 6m40s mile times on a trail race but it was far mellower than this one! Not tried a road 10k - might have to get one in the bag just to see.

That's about my 5k pace (6.30) although my favorite races are long ones at a slower pace more of a endurance person, half mara and above will do me nicely :D My favorite tri's used to be half Iron man (middle distance) thats why I loved doing the exmoor stagger

Not quite at that stage yet!

TBH, I think I'm more of a shorter distance semi sprinter (well sort of!) than a mega distance whippet.

10km is plenty for me at the moment!

With the times you are doing I would say you would make a very good 10k runner.

Cheers - only started just over a year ago so still finding my own pace/race strategy which seems to change every time I race!

Was wary of running much for a long time after spending a long time putting on healthy weight (3 stone in 2 years) at the gym but realised that trail running is fun, doesn't turn you into a skinny slip of a bloke and ties in well with MTBing.

Any events planned for you this year?
