Bank Holiday backfired on the Boss

Where I work there has always been the agreement with my immediate boss that those of us not needed on bank holidays, and those of us living far enough away etc.. that we would automatically be booked in as annual leave. This was always in prior verbal agreement.

My Boss's Boss (if you get that) came in last week and apparently went into a rant about why we weren't putting in annual leave forms for the bank holidays. It turned out she demanded that all of the workers who havent put in a form cant have the bank holidays off.

Looks like its backfired on her though. BHs are notoriously quiet days with minimal trade (as theres much less hospital staff to serve for one), so we're getting time and a half for being there. Secondly all those screwed over by this are going to now save up the leave and book it off in a lump amount during busy periods and weeks. So they will end up with no staff at busy times of year (eg when the students do their exams) and paying for too many when they dont need them.

Sometimes I wonder about management. Are they really thinking straight..?

When I was an impoverished, malnourished student I used to work all the holidays going at double-time rates. Sitting alone in the office, phones silent, I would stand up every hour on the hour and shout "ker-ching!".

Just make sure you take a fully loaded iPod/magazines/books/Wii in to the office that day.

In my experience gaffers fall into two catagories

    Those who know the score.

    And those who jobsworths.

The former get far more out of the employees than the latter.

    Heh heh, foolish manager!

    Awesome.
  • Couple of years ago the company I worked for wanted people to work the Bank Holiday so offered double time AND the day back as annual leave. It was like triple time. Sign me up for that one...

I nearly always work bank holidays. Even without the incentives I prefer to have my time off when others are working so I can do what I want without the crowds & traffic jams.

I used to have a photocopied page from a dictionary above my desk, with one of the definitions of "boss" being "a decorative knob".

Pretty much the way its worked has always been that the medical staff have some peeps stay on. Very, very few office and admin staff, less domestic and pretty much about a third of the catering.

I'm fairly certain an employer has the right to refuse requests for annual leave if they would be left understaffed.

We're always understaffed under normal days.

    Downfader,
You're not in Winchester hospital, are you? If so, I must congratulate you on the finest "hospital food" I have ever had, whilst the wife was in giving birth!

So whilst the missus was sweating, puffing and panting, and screaming with the pain, you were off down the canteen?

    Sirius,
Technically, no. She was inconsiderate enough to give birth at midnight so the canteen was shut. I did however avail myself of the food counter on subsequent visits. Thoroughly nice sausage and mash, if I remember correctly.

Nah sadly not. Though I hear its gone downhill of late there. They're going through the same financial problems as we are iirc.
