Just been riding a mate's road bike which has these handlebars and it felt great! He's got standard STI levers on there with bartape too so it's a whole new riding position/feeling... He used to ride a fixie with those bars, you see. I'm thinking of getting some myself. :)

I'm talking about these, in case you don't know:

The question is, would these be allowed in a road race?

  • Not under BC rules...

1.3.022 In competitions other than those covered by article 1.3.023, only the traditional type of handlebars (see diagram “structure 1”) may be used.

Structure 1's a sketch of a bog standard road bike.

    Damn!

Why is there such a rule? Doesn't seem to serve any purpose to me...? :?

I'm sure i've seen someone in the pro peloton riding on a flat-bar once. (As a joke/bet I think)

Simply because they're dangerous. It's far too easy to scoop up another riders cables, bars etc in a bunch, the same reason aero bars were banned for all but TT's. Not to mention the fact that running into the back of someone with two stabby objects up front could make a nasty mess.

They're OK for Hillclimbs and TT's just not allowed in Road Racing.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
