Hey

I have done both, but my mate is out of shape and I dont want to kill him with his first true MTB ride., less uphill the better, but some to be expected.

Whats best penrydd or cwmcarn

I did the W2 in afan a few weeks ago, and the climb was a killer, people say cwmcarn is bad, I found the W2 worse.

Anyway, he is picking me up at 11:00, what do you guys reckon, we live in cardiff, so either or?

Cheers.

Probably a bit late but I would recommend Penhydd for a beginner, the climb at Cwmcarn is steep, long and very technical in places. I would think a beginner would find it pretty off putting.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

He backed out, thats what I thought, cwmcarn can be quite bad in the beginning.

Oh well, will do some work on the bike, and bust heads on the PS3.

And got a tenner on the national.

Have you tried the Castell Coch area, and the trails going over towards Cearphilly? Some superb trails and lots of them, there's enough up there to play for hours.

For a first ride i wouldn't take someone to either... find some less imtimidating trails to get the guy or girl started on and workup to such ges as Cwmcarn and Afan...

If you start of iding there then where do you go for a treat...

Well I have done cwmcarn and afan, and did the W2 and nearly sh!t myself, did not realise it was black.

We went up to castell coch but we did not go all around it, I might do that over the easter. it looked ok up there and only 15 min from my house on bike.

Nice one guys, did not realise there was so much up there.
  • I've been up to the Castell Coch woods and shown one route, ( The Gauntlet ?) and have done that a couple of times. I have been told that there are some big drops and some pretty steep decents to look out for (being a beginner!). Whereabouts are they?

It looks a good place to go play for a while though as it's local to me.
    Canada16, I've pm'd you!

oh, have also been told it's a busy spot for doggers....!

Doggers..... SWEET. Will bring my camera.

Will look around as only 10 min or so from home, so no excuse.
