Can anyone inform me of what type and recommend a particular model in the £30-£60 price range.

I'm not sure if it is integral/integrated/semi integrated. :?

your thoughts and experiences will be gratefully received.

  • Really need your help here, has Cane Creek on tapered spacer which leads me to believe its a cane creek style fully integrated, but, the specialized mindset fitted has what looks like cups pressed into frame with loose bearings fitted in a cage.

    Either way the sealing is c**p and is not maintenance free like the rest of the bike.

    So any suggestions please, is the Hope version suitable for this fitment.

    I am having the same problem as you. Did you make any progress on this.

    Some reading I have done seems to suggest that any IS headset will work. I also went in to my local Specialized dealer and they said that I need to replace it with a new Mindset headset, which uses proper sealed bearings.

    Any other information anybody can give would be greatly appreciated.

    This is a minefield that I have just been through with an old Allez frame.

    As far as I can understand, the mindset is an (fully) integrated headset, but it looks a little different, as the bearing cartridges are attached to a "sleeve" that is pushed further into the headtube to stabilise the bearings. It is all one unit and can be tapped out like any other headset.

    In terms of replacement, any IS-standard headset will work (Cane Creek IS3, IS-6, IS-8; or FSA Orbit CC). The Specialized Concept Store in Ruislip actually recommended not to use a Mindset for many of the reasons that KarlMoreton suggests.

    I used a CaneCreek IS-3 (tall) and it requires one additional 3mm spacer beneath the top cap on the Allez to get a good fit, but other than that it's perfect.

    Whether that will be exactly the same for the Tricross, i don't know, but I would be surprised if there are large variations in the Mindsets being used.

    If you want to see the details of my investigations, check out the bike build blog in my signature - I am going to be changing the stem on my build in the next week or so, so I will add some photos of the headset in various stages of install to give you a feel for the Allez frame and Cane Creek headset

    I ordered these Cane Creekj Cartridge Bearings @£13.99 there is a stainless version as well;

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=11266

    Just requires you to use a drift to remove the cups from either end of frames head tube, they then fit straight in and all other parts are compatible.

    A lot less maintneance from then on, just replace cartridge bearings when they get notchy.

    Hope that helps, PM me if you have any probs I will try to help.
