The bike I'm hopefully getting this year has
Bontrager Rhythm Comp Disc 29, 28mm wide tubeless ready rims with
Bontrager XDX, 29x2.1 (53/51), tubeless ready, abrasion resistant, 120 TPI, aramid folding bead.
How does tubeless actually work?
is it just a wheel without innertubes that you stil need to pump up somehow?
do they fill with a sort of foam etc?
do they puncture?
I'm just curious of the advantages and disadvantages as the front wheel looks about £200+ (I expect the rear would cost a bit more) and I'm thinking of getting them to fit some normal 29" if there is no significant difference.

Similar to car tyres, the rim has a well that the bead fits in and seals on. Use some latex solution- Stans no tubes is good, many others out there- this will seal the tyre if you ever do puncture out on the trail. BUT, do take spare tube/s as its nigh on impossible to fit the tyre back on with a normal hand pump- all you need do is whiz the valve out of the rim, and fit the tube as normal and away you go.
Tubless is a new thing on me yet as well, but reports say smoother ride, less punctures and the ability to run lower pressures without pinch flatting.
