I'm in the market for a set of AM/strong trail wheels but I've found that I'm clueless when it comes to wheels :? First off, my budget isn't particularly big, perhaps around $500 (USD) max. Front hub needs to take a 20 mm thru axle, rear is standard QR with 135 mm hub spacing. Large enough to take a 2.35 tyre would be nice.

I guess that my budget is probably too low for custom built wheels, but if anyone could spell out the pros/cons of a custom build over the pre-built sets you find on the webshops I'd appreciate it.

So, I guess I'm looking for recommendations. If I had a bit more cash I guess Mavic Crossmax SX or Specialized roval traversée would be top choices? What are peoples opinions of the Hope hubs on DT Swiss 5.1s? Anyone tried the Transition Revolution AMs (some love for an almost local company)?

For anyone that's stuck with this to the end, you deserve a cookie. 8)

I'd be all over the roval traversees, I really want a set of those myself. Maybe later in the year... How much does Shimano XT go for over there? I'd have thought $500 should cover a set of 719 or 819s on XT or Hope hubs...

$402 for XT hubs with 819s (hand built). $576 if I change that to Pro II hubs. I can probably get the Pro IIs cheaper if I order them from CRC

I assume the XT hubs are pretty good then? I seem to remember someone saying the bearings are a bit odd but I don't know if that is odd good or odd bad :D

The XT hubs are pretty good and don't need much tlc and the same for the Hope... one difference is that the Hopes buzz when you are not peddling but the XTs are quiet, i lke quiet hubs

The other thing is that the guys i ride with are always having freehub bodys go or flange problems on their hopes wear as i haven't touched my XTs for a year and no problem

I find DT rims a little soft so i don't go there anymore

For me the traveree would be my pick... they look better in the flesh too...

    Either way enjoy your riding
