Cube SL Cross Comp

Hi there,
I've been cycling for years, but I'm not that knowledgeable about bikes, so I thought I'd try and get some advice before I purchase my next bike.
I've been looking at the Cube SL Cross Comp retailing for about £499.99, but haven't been able to find out much about the bike in terms of reviews.
There's a list of the specs here:

Does anyone have any experience with Cube bikes, or this bike in particular? My housemate has just purchased the Cube SL Cross Race, and he's really pleased with it, but he's only had it for about 2 weeks, so he can't really comment in terms of longevity. Also his bike was £1000, rather than £500, so I'm guessing there will be some considerable differences.
In terms of what I wan the bike for, I'll mainly be using it to get to and from university on a daily basis, but also to go on 20-30 mile long evening rides and lots of weekend cycling along country roads and gravel tracks etc, but nothing too demanding i.e. not into off roading much.
Could anyone suggest another bike that might be as good for the price?
Cheers,
Chris

Ah right, sorry about that.0

Why not look at a cyclocross bike though or even a normal road bike, if you're not into off-roading then it would probably feel much faster :?:winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

So if I were to look at a racing bike what would be a good bike around the £500 price mark?
With regards to the Cube bike in terms of spec, if its significantly better than anything else in the price range might it be work putting a set of slick or thin tyres on it?0 -
The Boardman bikes from Halfords get good write ups and seem excelent VFM
But you may need some spanner competence as the level of the staff in the shops seem to fluxuate wildly, check out the sticky at the top of the threads page, loads of useful info on there
Also jus checked the site and they seem to have gone up in price :?winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

From what i can gather on here from reading other threads 'hybrid' bikes seem to do everything but do it badly. I have no experience of anything other that a 3 ton full susser from back in the day.
I have been riding road bike since september (a bit longer but didn't ever look at it as a hobby) and regret that i didn't get a decent-ish roadie years ago it's so fast and there's lots more hand positions. If you have a mate with one i suggest trying one out, but not just for a 2 minute wobble as they take a bit longer to get used to than MTB's. If you like it then you'd be able to get a pretty decent bike from ebay for that kind of cash. They sometimes pop up as nearly new or barely used so definately worth looking for a bargain if you ask me. Others may disagree though..................winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Example of 'bargain' (providing it doesn't go up much more):

This bike is listed as having done only 40 miles and they come very highly regarded. They also hold their pricee pretty well in case you change your mind
However, BE WARNED, don't just 'buy a bike' ensure that it is goping to fit you suitably as the sizes can vary and an ill fitting bike will destroy your enjoyment and you'll hate it.
What sort of size would you need, incidentally?winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg
