I need help.

Been with the GF for 4 years on tuesday, and obviously the GF wants to do something special.

Luckily i've got the rents car atm so we're thinking of having a nice day out/picnic type thing, but where the hell do you go down south!!

if we were at mine - Lakes, Peak District and hundreds of national trust sites like Bolton Abbey etc
If we were at hers - Ogmore, Southerndown, Brecon Beacons, Tenby...

The only thing we can think of is Stonehenge... but neither of us are very "excited" about that :(

Come-on there must be somewhere nice down here!!!

    - New Forest (lots of nice pubs, ponies etc!)
    - Beaulieu (very pretty, nice places to eat and car museum if that floats you boat)
    - Motisfont Abbey (National Trust, very beautiful)
    - Cowes, Isle of Wight (honestly!) - drive to Portsmouth or Southampton, ferry to Cowes, lovely pubs and fab shops so extra brownie points from your girlfriend

    Will think of some more....

Nice little ferry journey and Cowes has some lovely places to eat and fab shops! Or Yarmouth? Very pretty and great restaurants (can recommend the Blue Crab - yummy :D ).

And don't forget a card / box of chocs / bottle of fizz etc - these things matter!!

If you've got the time to travel on the Ilse o' Widget then perhaps a trip to the southern coast (not far really) and visit the pearl farm. I took the missus there and paid for her to choose her own oyster (guaranteed pearl every time) and some jewellry to show it off. Not the most expensive gift but sometimes you get lucky as they evaluate every pearl on the spot and you get a certificate to show off too.

  • Well I hinted a the Isle of Wight when I dropped her off at uni... but she didn't sound too impressed :(

I'll try and sell it to her tonight :)
The oyster/pearl thing does sound nice tho, would give her a little keepsake afterwards :)

I wanna do something lie that too, since we've been at uni we've both been skint and i've found it difficult to spoil her etc. Sold my other bike last week to make sure I had enough to cover us for this :)

Drive through the New Forest to get to the Isle of W. Worth the diversion I think. What about the broads - hire a boat?

If you go to the IOW, you've got to visit Alum Bay Sand Shop, its the only thing I like about the island!

Castleton in the Peak District is worth a shout. Underground caverns, lovely castle, beautiful village, the shivering mountain Mam Tor and superb scenery.

    Caverns here:

That obviously isn't the Yarmouth in Norfolk. That couldn't be further from the description of that shithole.

    Fixed it for you :)

Four years is fish'n'chips and a few cans of Stella. You don't want to be aiming too high at this stage in the relationship.

I live north of Birmingham. To get to Castleton, I have to go about 75 miles north. Benji is around 140 miles south of me.

Fancy a 430 mile round trip?
  • I thort that was a bit fishy!! however when you put castleton in google maps its down in dorset

I am sure your GF will be happy if you say you are going to take her up a dark damp passage ;-)
  • What did you decide in the end? IOW? Arundel Castle is nice, and a bit closer, as another option? Barcome Mills is quite cool too as you have lots of potential picnic area, a pub and some boats you can hire to go down the river. Excellent if you get a nice day 8)

  • Still got until tuesday!!

Kewl cheers for more options :) will look into it :)

She mentioned a castle the other day so that could be a possibility, but she also said she like the idea of beaulieu because i would give us both something to do :D

Want to do something tomorrow too tho, so getting loads of great ideas :)

Brum to Sheff is only 64 miles as the corw flies, but agreed it is a long way from where he is!
  • If you're gonna go to the Isle of Wight, go to southsea and take the hovercraft over, much more fun.
  • We went to Bodiam Castle on Saturday which was really nice :)

It wasn't a huge Castle so it didnt get boring, and there were loads of steps to get upto the top to have a look around (don't think Kath enjoyed that so much, but the views were really good :)

Think we're off to Beaulieu tomorrow for a picknick and a roam about which will be nice :)

Thanks for all the suggestions :)
  • Did Bodiam for a school trip a 'few' years ago! Nice place :)

Beaulieu was also a school trip destination...beware the geese if they are still there!
